SIST EN ISO 8318:2003
(Main)Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads - Sinusoidal vibration tests using a variable frequency (ISO 8318:2000)
- Abstract
This International Standard specifies two methods for carrying out a sinusoidal vibration test on a complete, filled
transport package or unit load using a variable frequency. These tests may be used to assess the performance of a
package or an unit load in terms of its strength or the protection that it offers to its contents when it is subjected to
vertical vibration. Each may be performed either as a single test to investigate the effects of vertical vibration or as
part of a sequence of tests designed to measure the ability of a package or unit load to withstand a distribution
system that includes a vibration hazard.

SIST EN ISO 8318:2003, published by SIST, is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 8318:2002 for packaging vibration testing. It specifies two sinusoidal vibration test methods for complete, filled transport packages and unit loads so users can assess package strength and the protection given to contents under vertical vibration. The standard is intended for people who test, specify, buy, or qualify transport packaging.
What does SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 specify?
SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 specifies sinusoidal vibration tests using a variable frequency for a complete, filled transport package or unit load. The tests are used either as a single vertical vibration check or as one step in a test sequence for distribution hazards.
The document is organized into scope, normative references, term and definition, principle, apparatus, test item preparation, conditioning, procedure, and test report. Annex ZA gives the normative references and their corresponding European publications.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 8318:2003?
SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 requires the test item to be a complete, filled transport package or unit load, filled as for normal distribution and closed in its usual way. In practice, this means the specimen should represent the shipped condition, not a special laboratory build.
Test principle and test conditions
Clause 4 says the item is placed on a vibration table and subjected to vertical sinusoidal vibration with a variable frequency. The test conditions - atmospheric conditions, duration, peak acceleration, attitude, and restraint method - are predetermined, so the laboratory must decide these before the test starts.
Clause 4 also allows an added load when the test should simulate the bottom of a stack. That matters when the packaging must protect contents while carrying compressive load as well as vibration.
Apparatus and measurement
Clause 5 requires a vibration table that is large, rigid, and able to keep a horizontal surface during motion. The instrumentation must measure and control acceleration at the test surface with a response accurate within the stated tolerance over the test frequency range. In practice, the table and sensors must be good enough to produce and verify the intended vibration without adding misleading movement.
Preparation and conditioning
Clause 6 requires the test item to be prepared with intended contents, or with simulated contents that are as close as possible in size and physical properties. Clause 7 requires conditioning in accordance with one of the conditions in ISO 2233. This is important because packaging often behaves differently after temperature or humidity exposure.
Procedure: Method 1 and Method 2
Clause 8 gives two methods. Method 1 uses a vertical frequency sweep between 3 Hz and 100 Hz at a constant logarithmic sweep rate, with the item in a predetermined attitude and, if needed, restrained or fenced. It is used when the aim is to see how the package responds to a defined vibration exposure.
Method 2 starts with a resonance search at a lower acceleration level, records the responses on the item and the table, and then runs an endurance test at the most severe resonances. This method matters when the reader wants to identify weak frequencies and then dwell on them long enough to judge damage or loss of protection.
Clause 8 also limits unwanted horizontal vibration and requires the acceleration at the table to be measured close to the test item. That helps ensure the test reflects vertical excitation rather than mixed motion.
Reporting
Clause 9 lists the information that must be recorded, including the test method used, the frequency range, peak acceleration, resonant frequencies for Method 2, restraint, superimposed load, conditioning, and observed results. That makes the report usable for comparison, repeat testing, audits, and customer review.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 define?
- Test item - the complete, filled transport package or unit load being tested.
- Complete, filled transport package - a package prepared as it would be sent through distribution, with its contents inside and normally closed.
- Unit load - packaged goods combined as a single testable load.
- Method 1 - the variable-frequency sweep method used to expose the item to vertical sinusoidal vibration.
- Method 2 - the resonance-search-and-endurance method used to identify and then stress the most critical resonances.
- Resonance search test - the first part of Method 2, used to find frequencies where the item responds strongly.
- Superimposed load - an added load placed on the test item to simulate stacking conditions.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 8318:2003?
Packaging engineers use SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 to design and evaluate packs for transport vibration. Test laboratories use it to run controlled vibration tests and report results in a standard way. Quality managers and buyers use it when they need a common test method for supplier qualification, packaging validation, or failure investigation. It is relevant wherever complete transport packages and unit loads must survive distribution with vertical vibration hazards.
What changed in SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 from the previous edition?
SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 replaces SIST EN 28318:1998. The European adoption also states that EN ISO 8318 supersedes EN 28318:1992, and the underlying ISO 8318:2000 is the second edition and replaces ISO 8318:1986 with technical revision.
Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 8318:2003?
- ISO 2206 - used for identifying the parts of the package when testing, including the attitudes recorded in the report.
- ISO 2233 - provides the conditioning conditions applied before the vibration test.
- ISO 2234 - provides the stacking test using static load, which is referenced when a superimposed load is used.
Annex ZA maps these international publications to the relevant European publications.
What does the SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 document contain?
SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 contains two test methods, apparatus requirements, specimen preparation rules, conditioning, and report content for sinusoidal vibration testing with variable frequency. It also includes the measurement and restraint details needed to set up the vibration table correctly. Clause 9 gives the reporting items that document sample identity, test conditions, resonant frequencies, and observed behavior. Annex ZA lists the normative references and their European equivalents for users working within the EN system.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 8318 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 122, Packaging, Subcommittee
SC 3, Performance requirements and tests for means of packaging, packages and unit loads (as required by
ISO/TC 122).
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8318:1986) which has been technically revised.
