Overview

EN 13307-1:2006 is a CEN European Standard that defines requirements for timber blanks and semi‑finished profiles for non‑structural uses, primarily for joinery (windows, doors, stairs). It covers solid, glued laminated and finger‑jointed products made from hardwood and softwood, specifying dimensional tolerances, stability (warp), moisture content, lamination and marking. The standard establishes a common basis for contracts between suppliers of semi‑finished timber and manufacturers of finished joinery products.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & materials: Applies to timber blanks and semi‑finished profiles for non‑structural uses (joinery), including glued laminated and finger‑jointed products; both hardwood and softwood.
  • Reference moisture content: Geometrical and physical characteristics are referenced to 12% moisture content; delivery moisture content must be agreed with the buyer.
  • Dimensional tolerances:
    • Cross‑section tolerances: sawn +2 mm / −1 mm; planed +0.5 mm / 0 mm (at 12% MC).
    • Lengths: specified lengths have no minus tolerance.
  • Warp and stability: Limits for bow, spring, twist and cup are defined (measured per EN 1310). Example: bow for sawn pieces F = (L/1000)² or 2 mm, whichever is greater; planed pieces have tighter limits.
  • Moisture measurement: Estimation per EN 13183‑2 (electrical method); oven‑dry EN 13183‑1 for dispute resolution.
  • Lamination and joints:
    • Lamella thickness not generally limited; guidance for outer lamella (external use) recommends minimum thickness (see standard).
    • Finger joints: outer layers must meet prEN 942 requirements; gaps/cracks at fingers are not permitted.
    • Butt joints only permitted in inner layers with spacing rules.
    • Species mixing allowed only with proven bond and stability (see prCEN/TS 13307‑2).
  • Marking & labelling: Manufacturer, service class, batch ID, standard number, grade, Latin species code (EN 13556), dimensions, and surface condition (planed/unplaned).

Applications

  • Specification and procurement of semi‑finished timber for joinery manufacturers (windows, doors, stair components).
  • Quality control criteria for timber suppliers and timber processors producing blanks, lamellas and profiles.
  • Contractual documentation between sellers and end‑product manufacturers to ensure dimensional stability and moisture suitability.
  • Basis for inspection and acceptance testing of batches of semi‑finished timber.

Who should use this standard

  • Timber suppliers and manufacturers of semi‑finished profiles
  • Joinery and door/window manufacturers
  • Product specifiers, architects and procurement teams
  • Quality assurance, testing laboratories and conformity assessors
