Tests on electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions -- Part 2-2: Test for vertical flame propagation for a single small insulated wire or cable - Procedure for diffusion flame

Specifies the procedure for testing the resistance to vertical flame propagation for a single small vertical electrical insulated conductor or cable, or optical cable, under fire conditions. The apparatus is given in EN 60332-2-1. This standard gives the procedure for testing small optical fibre cables or a small insulated conductor or cable when the method specified in EN 60332-1-2 is not suitable because some small optical fibre cables may break or small conductors may melt during the application of the flame. The recommended range of application is for the testing of small single insulated conductors or cables of less than 0,5 mm² cross-section. NOTE Since the use of insulated conductor or cable which retards flame propagation and complies with the recommended requirements of this standard is not sufficient by itself to prevent propagation of fire under all conditions of installation, it is recommended that wherever the risk of propagation is high, for example, in long vertical runs of bunches of cables, special installation precautions should also be taken. It cannot be assumed that because the sample of cable complies with the performance requirements recommended in this standard, that a bunch of cables will behave in a similar manner. (See EN 60332-3 series.) Recommended requirements for performance are given in Annex A. Has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.

EN 60332-2-2:2004 (CLC) specifies a test procedure for vertical flame propagation of a single small insulated wire or cable - including small optical fibre cables - using a diffusion flame. The standard is intended for samples that cannot be tested with the 1 kW pre-mixed flame method (EN/IEC 60332-1-2) because small optical fibres may break or metallic conductors may melt. The required apparatus is defined in EN/IEC 60332-2-1. This document is a group safety publication (IEC Guide 104) and includes recommended performance requirements in Annex A.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Single vertical insulated conductor or small optical cable under fire conditions; recommended for samples with conductor cross-section < 0.5 mm².
  • Sample dimensions: Test piece length typically (600 ± 25) mm.
  • Conditioning:
    • General: (23 ± 5) °C for ≥16 h at (50 ± 20) % RH.
    • Painted/lacquered finishes: additional pre‑conditioning at (60 ± 2) °C for 4 h before standard conditioning.
  • Positioning and mounting:
    • Metallic-conductor samples fixed vertically with a loading arrangement (specified in the standard) so the specimen axis is centered in the screened test enclosure.
    • Optical fibre cables supported on horizontal supports as prescribed.
  • Flame application:
    • Burner centre-line at 45° ± 2° to test piece; horizontal gap from burner orifice to specimen ~ (10 ± 1) mm.
    • Flame must envelope the specimen.
    • Standard flame application duration for metallic conductor samples: (20 ± 1) s. If conductor melts earlier (time T), the test is repeated for (T – 2) s and the repeat result used for assessment.
  • Safety and evaluation:
    • Measures for fire, smoke and toxic product hazards (notably halogenated materials).
    • Test evaluation criteria and reporting procedures defined in Clause 6; Annex A gives recommended performance thresholds.
  • Referenced standards: EN/IEC 60332-2-1 (apparatus), EN/IEC 60332-1-2 (premixed flame), IEC 60695-4 (terminology), IEC Guide 104.

Applications - who uses it and why

  • Cable manufacturers use EN 60332-2-2 to validate small insulated conductors and micro optical cables for vertical flame resistance where other methods are unsuitable.
  • Independent test laboratories apply the procedure for type testing, compliance assessment and certification.
  • Specifiers, product safety engineers and certification bodies reference the standard in safety dossiers and regulatory compliance.
  • Installers and system designers consult the standard to understand material behavior, but must note that passing this single‑sample test does not guarantee performance of cable bundles or long vertical runs - see EN 60332-3 series for multi‑cable scenarios.
