Overview
EN 13126-12:2025 - published by CEN - defines requirements and test methods for side hung projecting reversible hardware used on windows and door-height windows. The standard covers functional performance, durability, strength, security and corrosion resistance of hardware that supports outward-opening, reversible (cleaning-from-inside) sash movements. It applies whether or not the hardware includes integral restrictors (restrictors are tested per EN 13126-5).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to side hung projecting reversible hinges/assemblies for windows and door-height windows.
- Specimens: hardware tested mounted on a window without gaskets to accommodate components.
- Classification (four-box system)
- Box 1 - Durability: Grades H1 = 5 000 cycles, H2 = 10 000 cycles, H3 = 20 000 cycles.
- Box 2 - Mass: Tested sash mass in 10 kg steps (e.g., 030 = 30 kg, 050 = 50 kg).
- Box 3 - Corrosion resistance: Grade determined in accordance with corrosion requirements (see clause on corrosion).
- Box 4 - Test sizes: Sash Rebate Width (SRW) x Sash Rebate Height (SRH) in mm (test size chosen to be the most severe recommended by manufacturer).
- Performance and test methods
- Ease of sash movement: Initiating and sustaining movement shall not exceed 100 N.
- Durability (cycling): Tests at H1 / H2 / H3 cycle counts (+1% tolerance); hardware must continue to function normally after cycling.
- Obstructed track test: Hardware must tolerate abusive forces from obstructions and continue to function.
- Static load and additional load tests: Verify mechanical strength; sash-to-frame clearance shall not increase by more than 3 mm after static load.
- Corrosion resistance: Requirements and tests referenced (see EN 1670).
- Marking and documentation
- Classification information shall be presented together with the standard number (EN 13126-12).
Applications and users
- Who uses it: window and hardware manufacturers, test laboratories, product engineers, specifiers, architects, façade and window system designers, procurement teams and regulatory bodies.
- Practical uses:
- Verifying product durability and safety for outward-projecting, reversible window hardware.
- Selecting hardware for specified sash masses, exposure classes and required lifecycle (H1–H3).
- Supporting conformity testing, product datasheets and technical claims for building projects and tenders.
- Informing design decisions where corrosion resistance and obstructed-operation resilience matter (coastal, public or high-use buildings).
Related standards
- EN 13126 (other parts) - common requirements and other hardware families (e.g., Part 1, Part 5 for restrictors, Part 11 for top hung hardware).
- EN 1670 - corrosion resistance test methods and classifications.
