Abstract

This International Standard specifies methods of horizontal impact testing (horizontal or inclined plane test and
pendulum test) on a complete, filled transport package or a unit load. The test may be performed either as a single
test to investigate the effects of horizontal impact or as part of a sequence of tests designed to measure the ability
of a package or a unit load to withstand a distribution system that includes a horizontal impact hazard.

SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of the European and International standard for packaging impact testing. It specifies horizontal impact tests for complete, filled transport packages and unit loads, so users can assess how packaged goods behave when a distribution system includes a horizontal shock hazard.

The standard covers three test set-ups - inclined plane, horizontal plane, and pendulum - and is used for both stand-alone impact checks and as part of a broader test sequence.

What does SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 specify?

SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 specifies methods for horizontal impact testing of complete, filled transport packages and unit loads. The document is organized into scope, normative references, one defined term, the test principle, apparatus, specimen preparation and conditioning, procedure, and the test report, followed by Annex ZA.

The standard is aimed at situations where the package or unit load may hit a vertical surface during handling or transport. In practice, that means it helps users reproduce a likely distribution hazard under controlled conditions.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 2244:2003?

SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 centers on controlling the impact event, the specimen condition, and the way the result is recorded. The main point is to make the test repeatable enough that the observed damage or performance can be linked to a known impact condition.

Clause 4 - principle

Clause 4 says the test specimen is given a horizontal velocity and brought to a stop by impact with a vertical surface. The atmosphere, impact velocity, and specimen attitude are predetermined. In practice, this means the lab must control the test setup closely enough to match the intended transport hazard.

Clause 4 also allows profiled inserts between the impact surface and the specimen face or edge. That lets the tester concentrate the impact in a particular area when a more localized hazard needs to be simulated.

Clause 5 - apparatus

Clause 5 defines the impact surface and the three apparatus types: inclined plane, horizontal plane, and pendulum. The impact surface must be rigid and larger than the impacting face or selected part of the specimen. This matters because a flexible or undersized surface would change the shock event.

Clause 5 also allows optional interposed hazards, provided their dimensions, material, and location are specified. In practice, this is how a lab documents a special impact condition instead of relying on a generic bumper.

Clauses 6 and 7 - preparation, conditioning, and procedure

Clause 6 requires the specimen to be filled with its intended contents and closed as it would be for distribution. Simulated or substituted contents may be used if they are close in size and physical behavior, which helps when real contents are unavailable.

Clause 6 also requires conditioning in accordance with ISO 2233. That matters because package behavior can change with temperature and humidity, so the test result should reflect the intended environment.

Clause 7 requires the test to be run, where possible, in atmospheric conditions matching conditioning, with impact velocity within 5% of the target. It also sets attitude limits for face, edge, and corner impacts. In practice, the lab must align the specimen carefully, because a small change in orientation can change the damage pattern.

Clause 8 - test report

Clause 8 requires a detailed report covering the specimen, contents, conditioning, impact velocity, apparatus, any hazard insert, and any deviation from the method. That gives the buyer, supplier, or test lab a traceable record of how the result was obtained.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 define?

SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 formally defines one term and uses several other key test terms throughout the method.

  • Test specimen - a complete, filled transport package or unit load that is tested.
  • Impact surface - the rigid surface against which the specimen strikes during the test.
  • Interposed hazard - an optional insert placed to concentrate the impact in a chosen area.
  • Conditioning - the pre-test environmental treatment carried out in line with ISO 2233.
  • Attitude - the orientation of the specimen at impact, especially for face, edge, or corner strikes.
  • Peak deceleration - the highest deceleration value recorded when impact measurement is used.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 2244:2003?

SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 is used by packaging engineers, test laboratories, quality managers, and buyers who need to verify transport packaging or unit loads. It is relevant in packaging, logistics, shipping, and any industry that sends filled packages through handling systems where horizontal impact can occur.

It is especially useful when a package design must be checked before release, when a packaging specification needs verification, or when test results must be reported in a standard form that other parties can review.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 replaces SIST EN 22244:1996. The ISO foreword says ISO 2244:2000 is the third edition and that it technically revises ISO 2244:1985. The CEN foreword says EN ISO 2244 supersedes EN 22244:1992.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 2244:2003?

Annex ZA names the companion standards used with SIST EN ISO 2244:2003.

  • ISO 2206 - used for identifying parts when testing; the report uses this method to describe specimen attitude.
  • ISO 2233 - used for conditioning for testing; it sets the environmental conditioning referenced in the procedure and report.

What does the SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 document contain?

SIST EN ISO 2244:2003 contains three test configurations, with figures showing the inclined plane tester, the horizontal plane tester, and the pendulum apparatus. It also includes figures for attitude tolerances when the impact is on an edge or a corner.

Clause 5 describes the apparatus in detail, including the impact surface, optional hazards, the carriage or pendulum arrangement, and impact measurement when required. Clause 7 gives the step-by-step procedures for each test type. Clause 8 gives the reporting checklist, including specimen description, conditioning data, impact velocity, apparatus type, and any deviations or observations.

ISO 2244:2000(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 2244 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 122, Packaging, Subcommittee
SC 3, Performance requirements and tests for means of packaging, packages and unit loads (as required by
ISO/TC 122).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 2244:1985) which has been technically revised.
