Overview

EN ISO 7492:2019 - "Dentistry - Dental explorer" is a European adoption of ISO 7492:2019 that specifies dimensions and performance requirements for dental explorers used for tactile examination of tooth surfaces. The standard defines geometry, measurement points, materials, finish, mechanical connections and reprocessing resistance for explorers. Endodontic explorers are explicitly excluded.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions: establishes terminology (handle, shank, working end, datum point, working tip) aligned with ISO 1942.
  • Shapes and allowable forms: prescribes acceptable explorer forms (arc, double-angled, elbowed, double-elbowed, curved, hooked, 3D shaped, right angle) and refers to Figures 2–9 and Table 2 for common dimensions.
  • Dimensions and measurement points: defines how to measure working tip length (b), working end height (h1), shank height (h2), radius (r), and angles (α, β) with specified tolerances.
  • Materials:
    • Working end must be metallic in accordance with ISO 7153-1.
    • Handle material is at manufacturer’s discretion but must meet surface finish, connection strength and resistance to reprocessing requirements (Clauses 4.5–4.7).
  • Mechanical properties & tests:
    • Hardness testing is referenced (ISO 6507-1 Vickers and ISO 6508-1 Rockwell methods).
    • Tests for connection strength include tensile load and torque checks.
    • Visual inspection, dimensional verification and reprocessing resistance tests are specified (Clause 5).
  • Sterilization and reprocessing: manufacturers must provide processing information per ISO 17664; explorers should tolerate repeated reprocessing. The standard notes a recommended maximum overall length (173 mm) to suit sterilization cassettes.
  • Labelling: marking and package labelling requirements include traceability features; a UDI (Unique Device Identifier) requirement was added.

Applications and users

EN ISO 7492:2019 is practical for:

  • Manufacturers and designers of dental explorers to ensure compliant geometry, materials and test methods.
  • Quality assurance and regulatory teams for product verification, CE marking and audit readiness.
  • Procurement and sterilization managers to select instruments compatible with sterilization workflow and cassettes.
  • Dental clinics and professional bodies seeking clarity on instrument safety, interchangeability and reprocessing instructions. The standard supports consistent instrument performance for clinical tasks such as caries detection, calculus detection and furcation assessment.

Related standards

  • ISO 7153-1 - Surgical instruments - Materials (metals)
  • ISO 17664 - Processing information for medical devices

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
