Agglomerated stone - Test methods - Part 12: Determination of dimensional stability

This European Standard specifies the test method to be used for the determination of the dimensional stability and warping of agglomerated stones when in contact with water.
This European Standard applies to agglomerated stones to be installed by adhesive on walls and floors.
The test is mainly performed to classify the material according to the degree of sensitivity to water and to select a suitable adhesive for the correct laying of agglomerated stones.

Aglomeriran kamen - Preskusne metode - 12. del: Ugotavljanje dimenzijske stabilnosti

Ta evropski standard določa preskusno metodo za ugotavljanje dimenzijske stabilnosti in zvijanja aglomeriranega kamna ob stiku z vodo.

Overview

EN 14617-12:2012 - Agglomerated stone: Test methods - Part 12: Determination of dimensional stability (CEN) specifies a laboratory test to determine the dimensional stability and warping of agglomerated stone (engineered stone) when in contact with water. The method is intended for agglomerated tiles to be fixed by adhesive on walls and floors and is used to classify materials by sensitivity to water and to guide the selection of a suitable adhesive for correct installation.

Key topics and requirements

  • Test principle: measure vertical displacement of a free corner caused by moisture from a wet felt placed on the tile backside; deformation recorded by digital gauges.
  • Apparatus: flat reference plane, three supports, wet cloth/felt, polyethylene film, water spray dispenser and four digital gauges (0.01 mm accuracy) - five gauges in the informative procedure.
  • Test conditions: standard laboratory conditions (23 ± 2) °C and 50 % RH.
  • Specimens: nominal tile size 300 × 300 mm at installation thickness; store vertically for at least 24 h before testing. Very wet samples: dry 12 h at 50 °C prior to conditioning.
  • Procedure: tile placed upside down on three supports, wet felt applied and kept continuously wet; deformations recorded after 6 hours.
  • Result expression: vertical displacement D = |d(3) − d(1)| (measured after 6 h, accuracy 0.1 mm).
  • Classification (water sensitivity):
    • Class A - stable, D < 0.3 mm
    • Class B - sensitive, 0.3 mm ≤ D < 0.6 mm
    • Class C - unstable/very sensitive, D ≥ 0.6 mm
  • Adhesive guidance (Annex B):
    • Class A: adhesive selected per substrate/other requirements.
    • Class B: prefer fast-setting/drying cementitious adhesive (class F, EN 12004); if displacement still ≥ 0.3 mm, use water-free reaction resin adhesive (type R, EN 12004).
    • Class C: use water-free reaction resin adhesive (type R).

Applications and who should use this standard

  • Manufacturers of agglomerated stone: to verify product performance and provide classification data for technical datasheets.
  • Independent testing laboratories: to perform standardized dimensional stability testing for conformity, QA and R&D.
  • Specifiers, architects and consultants: to assess suitability of agglomerated tiles for wet environments and select compatible adhesives.
  • Tile installers and adhesive manufacturers: to choose correct adhesive systems (cementitious vs reaction resin) based on measured water sensitivity and to reduce risk of bowing or loss of planarity.
  • Regulatory and procurement bodies: to include standardized test data in specifications and acceptance criteria.

Related standards
