1 Scope
This document specifies a test method for the verification of the resistance to abrasion of detonating
cords.
This document does not apply to safety fuses.
2 Normative references
The following documents are referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content
constitutes requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For
undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
EN 10088-2:2024, Stainless steels — Part 2: Technical delivery conditions for sheet/plate and strip of
corrosion resistant steels for general purposes
EN 13630-1:2025, Explosives for civil uses — Detonating cords and safety fuses — Part 1: Requirements
EN 13857-1:2025, Explosives for civil uses — Part 1: Vocabulary
3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 13857-1:2025 apply.
4 Principle
The resistance to abrasion of detonating cord is important to prevent damage to the coating or
inadvertent initiation during handling and transport.
For the verification of the resistance to abrasion of detonating cords, the coating of detonating cord test
pieces are subjected to the wear of an abrasive strip.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Digital timer with relay output, capable of:
— being set to a predetermined time in the range of (0 to 10) s with a permissible error of ± 0,01 s;
— being started (triggered) when the hinged arm (5.2.4) is lifted;
— automatically stopping the rotor (5.2.1) when the predetermined time has elapsed.
5.2 Abrasion test apparatus, comprising the main components as shown in Figure 1.
Dimensions in millimetres
Key
1 pivot
2 hinged arm (5.2.4)
3 (detonating cord) test piece
4 weight A (5.2.3)
5 pulley (5.2.6)
6 rod
7 weight B (as part of the pulley (5.2.6))
8 clamp screw for attaching the test piece
9 clamp (5.2.5)
10 rotor (5.2.1)
11 rectangular box (5.2.8)
NOTE The hinged arm, the pulley, the clamp and the rotor are mounted to a back plate that is not shown in
Figure 1.
Figure 1 — Abrasion test apparatus with rotor in starting position
5.2.1 Rotor made from steel or brass with a perimeter of (453 ± 2) mm to which three abrasive strips
(5.2.2) are attached as shown in Figure 2 by means of glue or double-sided adhesive tape. It shall be
ensured that electrical contact between the abrasive strips and the rotor is made; this can be provided by
slits on the rotor where the ends of the abrasive strips are inserted (see Figure 2). The rotor shall rotate
at a speed of (9,96 ± 0,18) rpm, producing a mean peripheral speed of (0,075 ± 0,001) m/s.
Depending on attachment type of the abrasive strip to the rotor (glue or adhesive tape), it is possible that
the abrasive strip needs to be bent carefully in order to make it fit properly against the surface of the
rotor.
Dimensions in millimetres
Key
1 slit for the end of the abrasive strip
2 abrasive strip (5.2.2)

5.2.2 Abrasive strips, three pieces having a width of (10 ± 1) mm and a length of (145 ± 1) mm each,
made of grinding steel as specified in Annex A.
5.2.3 Weight A to apply a load of (12,20 ± 0,02) N, to the test piece through the hinged arm (5.2.4) as
shown in Figure 1.
5.2.4 Hinged arm, made of steel or brass with dimensions as shown in Figure 3. In the starting position,
the hinged arm alone shall apply a load of (8,35 ± 0,05) N to the test piece. It shall be possible to fix the
hinged arm in a position by means of a retaining pin.
Dimensions in millimetres
Figure 3 — Front view (left) and side view (right) of the hinged arm
5.2.5 Clamp for attaching the test piece (see Figure 1, item 9).
5.2.6 Pulley, with a diameter (70 ± 1) mm, to which the test piece is clamped and that applies a tensile
stress of (8,1 ± 0,5) N to the test piece, by means of a rod and weight B as shown in Figure 1.
As shown in Figure 1, the weight on the rod to the right of the pulley may hang down the right side of the
pulley.
5.2.7 Motor, capable of maintaining a constant speed of rotation of the rotor (5.2.1) independent of the
load applied to it during testing. The motor is not shown in Figure 1.
NOTE A DC motor with an output power of at least 500 W and with a separate speed control can be used.
The rotor (5.2.1) shall reach the speed of rotation specified in 5.2.1 in 0,6 s after starting the motor.
Annex B contains a method for the verification that the required speed of the rotor is reached after 0,6 s.
5.2.8 Rectangular box, as optional element of the abrasion test apparatus to maintain the temperature
of the test piece under test, e.g. when equipped with a layer of insulation material.
5.3 Conditioning chamber, capable of maintaining the maximum temperature of use as specified for
the detonating cord under test in accordance with EN 13630-1:2025, 4.1.1, with a tolerance of ± 2 °C.
5.4 Means of sealing, for safety reasons, to close the open ends of the detonating cords. The means of
sealing used shall not have a chemical affinity with the tested explosive. The means of sealing shall not
affect the test result.
EXAMPLE Adhesive tape, mad
