Overview
SIST EN ISO 1158:2026 specifies standardized test methods for determining the chlorine content in plastics based on vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers, free from plasticizers or additives. Developed by CEN and harmonized with ISO 1158:2026, this international standard provides laboratories, manufacturers, and quality assurance professionals with two precise analytical approaches: combustion in a bomb (method A) and combustion in a flask (method B).
Measuring the chlorine content in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and its copolymers is essential for regulatory compliance, material identification, and quality control in polymer production. Accurate chlorine determination helps ensure product integrity and safety across a range of industries.
Key Topics
The standard covers:
- Scope and Purpose: Determination of chlorine content in vinyl chloride-based homopolymers and copolymers.
- Test Methods:
- Method A: Combustion in a bomb using sodium peroxide and potentiometric or Volhard titration.
- Method B: Combustion in an oxygen flask, followed by titration.
- Sample Preparation: Drying and size requirements for test specimens.
- Required Reagents: Specifications for analytical-grade chemicals and pure water.
- Apparatus: Detailed equipment requirements for both test methods.
- Result Calculation: Specification for expressing chlorine content as a mass percentage.
- Precision and Reporting: Guidelines for repeatability and test report contents.
- Safety Considerations: Handling precautions for both combustion methods.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 1158:2026 is widely utilized in:
- Quality Control: Verifies the chlorine content in PVC materials before further processing or product release.
- Material Specification: Ensures that raw materials and finished products meet required standards and regulatory benchmarks.
- Research & Development: Assists in polymer formulation studies and the evaluation of new vinyl chloride-based copolymers.
- Compliance Testing: Supports conformity assessments for international export and market entry.
- Regulatory Audits: Ensures adherence to chemical composition limits in the manufacture of plastics for critical applications such as medical devices, construction, and food packaging.
Laboratories and production sites benefit from standardized test procedures that improve reproducibility and facilitate the comparison of results across different facilities and countries.
Related Standards
Professionals often refer to the following documents alongside SIST EN ISO 1158:2026:
- ISO 3696: Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods.
- ISO 6353-1: Reagents for chemical analysis - General test methods.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types

This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 1158:1998), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— the mandatory normative references clause has been added (see Clause 2);
— the mandatory terms and definitions clauses has been added (see Clause 3)
— the unit of concentration of nitric acid solution has been changed, and a preparation method has been
added (see 5.3);
— a method for determining the endpoint of titration by potentiometric titration has been added (see 8.1.6,
