Methods of test for dense shaped refractory products - Part 7: Determination of modulus of rupture at elevated temperatures
This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the modulus of rupture of dense and insulating shaped refractory products at elevated temperatures, under conditions of a constant rate of increase of stress. A method for determination of the same property at ambient temperature is given in EN 993-6. Note: The method relates primarily to fired refractories. If it is to be applied to chemically bonded or tar-bonded bricks, the bricks will usually require some form of preliminary heat treatment.

Overview
SIST EN 993-7:2000 is a European Standard developed by CEN that outlines the method for determining the modulus of rupture of dense and insulating shaped refractory products at elevated temperatures. This standard is essential for assessing the mechanical strength of refractories under high-temperature conditions relevant to industrial applications. It applies primarily to fired refractories, with special considerations for chemically or tar-bonded bricks requiring preliminary heat treatment. The standard complements EN 993-6, which specifies the determination of the same property at ambient temperature.
Key Topics
Modulus of Rupture Measurement
The standard specifies a testing procedure to measure the flexural strength or modulus of rupture of refractory products when subjected to increasing stress at elevated temperatures.Test Conditions
Emphasis is placed on a controlled test environment with a constant rate of stress increase to ensure reliable and reproducible results.Material Scope
The method primarily targets dense shaped refractory products and insulating refractories, which are critical components in high-temperature industrial processes.Applicability
While focused on fired refractories, the standard also addresses the preliminary treatment needed for chemically bonded or tar-bonded bricks to yield accurate test outcomes.
Applications
Industrial Refractories Quality Control
SIST EN 993-7:2000 is widely used by manufacturers and quality assurance laboratories to verify the performance of refractory products designed for furnaces, kilns, boilers, and other high-temperature equipment.Material Research and Development
Researchers utilize this testing method to develop new refractory materials with improved mechanical properties at elevated temperatures.Failure Analysis and Safety Assessments
Testing the modulus of rupture at operating temperatures supports the prediction of refractory lifespan and helps prevent structural failures in thermal installations.Compliance and Certification
Compliance with EN 993-7 ensures products meet European standards, facilitating market acceptance and regulatory approvals.
Related Standards
