Overview
EN 2086:2004 is a CEN/AECMA aerospace series standard that specifies material and manufacturing requirements for aluminium alloy AL‑P2618A in tempers T351 and T851, applied to hand and die forgings with maximum section a ≤ 150 mm. The standard defines heat treatment, mechanical property requirements, inspection/test directions and dimensional limits for aerospace applications.
Key topics and requirements
- Material designation: Aluminium alloy AL‑P2618A, produced as hand and die forgings (forging stock per EN 2486).
- Size categories: Sections classified as a ≤ 90 mm, 90 < a ≤ 120 mm, and 120 < a ≤ 150 mm.
- Delivery conditions / heat treatment:
- Solution heat treatment at 525–535 °C with water quench (commonly boiling water quench for T351).
- Controlled stretch after quench of +1% to +5%.
- T851 requires subsequent artificial aging at 185–195 °C for 16–24 h.
- Mechanical properties (typical ranges across sizes and test directions):
- Proof stress Rp0.2: approximately 355–385 MPa
- Tensile strength Rm: approximately 405–440 MPa
- Elongation A: ≥ 3–6% depending on section and test direction (L, LT, ST)
- Additional parameters:
- Electrical conductivity: typical ~17.5 MS/m (T351) and ~21.0 MS/m (T851).
- Hardness variation limits and permitted batch/product deltas are specified (product and batch HB variation limits).
- Testing and inspection: Test-piece selection, macrostructure, internal/external defect acceptance, dimensional and marking inspections follow EN 4400‑7 and other referenced EN aerospace material rules.
- Qualification: Product qualification programs to be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
Applications and who uses this standard
EN 2086 is intended for the aerospace supply chain where high-strength aluminium forgings are required. Typical users include:
- Material engineers and metallurgists specifying aluminium forgings for aerospace structures
- Forging manufacturers and heat‑treatment facilities producing AL‑P2618A forgings
- Quality, inspection and procurement teams verifying conformity to aerospace material standards
- OEMs, subcontractors and certification authorities requiring standardized mechanical and processing requirements for forgings
