Overview
EN 61076-7-001:2004 (IEC 61076-7-001:2004) is a blank detail specification for connectors for electronic equipment focused on cable outlet accessories. Rather than specifying a single product, this standard gives a recommended layout and guidance for preparing detail specifications - defining what information manufacturers, designers and approval authorities should include so that products are clear, comparable and interchangeable.
Key Topics
- Purpose and scope: Guidance on which cable outlet accessories are covered and which characteristic features to state (e.g., shield termination, materials, sealing).
- Drawing information: Uniform presentation of drawings to support selection and interchangeability:
- Use of one projection method (first or third angle) and SI (metric) units (inch equivalents optional).
- Drawings are for selection/interchangeability, not manufacturing, and must follow ISO drawing practices.
- Include isometric views, overall dimensions, mounting information, special tools, and testing gauges/jigs.
- Dimensioning and tolerancing: Follow ISO 129 and ISO 1101 for dimensions, tolerances and geometrical tolerancing.
- System of lettering: Recommended use of capital and small letters to standardize dimension references.
- Contents of a detail specification: Standard clause structure to include title, scope, type designation, common features, dimensions/mass, gauges/jigs/fixtures, characteristics, test schedule, quality assessment, capability assessment, and ordering information.
- Characteristics and testing:
- Climatic category selection (per IEC 61076-7).
- Electrical: housing/shell continuity, shielding effectiveness where applicable.
- Mechanical criteria and associated test schedules (no numeric values in the blank specification - it defines what to include).
- Quality & capability assessment: Guidance on including quality assessment and capability approval information for suppliers.
Applications
- Product specification templates for connector manufacturers and component designers.
- Technical documentation for approval authorities, test laboratories and procurement teams to verify intermateability and interchangeability.
- Basis for creating consistent datasheets, drawings and ordering information that facilitate international trade and compliance.
- Useful for electrical/mechanical engineers working on cable outlet solutions in telecommunications, data centres, instrumentation and industrial electronics.
Related Standards
- IEC/EN 61076-7 - Sectional specification for cable outlet accessories (to be used in conjunction).
- IEC/EN 61076-1 - Generic specification for connectors with assessed quality.
- ISO 129 and ISO 1101 - Technical drawing dimensioning and geometrical tolerancing.
This blank detail specification ensures consistent, searchable, and technically complete documentation for cable outlet accessories - improving interoperability and reducing ambiguity in connector design and procurement.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
