SIST EN 14529:2006
(Main)Respiratory protective devices - Self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with half mask designed to include a positive pressure lung governed demand valve for escape purposes only
- Abstract
This European Standard specifies minimum requirements for self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with half mask designed to include a positive pressure lung governed demand valve for escape purposes only.
Such equipment is intended for use in work situations where the risk on overpressurisation of the pressure vessels with their valves due to hot environmental conditions is low.
This European Standard does not apply to apparatus for work and rescue or to diving apparatus.
Laboratory and practical performance tests are included for the assessment of compliance with the requirements.

SIST EN 14529:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 14529:2005 from CEN for respiratory protective devices. It specifies minimum requirements and test methods for self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with a half mask and a positive pressure lung governed demand valve, intended for escape purposes only. It is aimed at manufacturers, test laboratories, certification bodies, and buyers who need to judge whether this type of escape apparatus fits a workplace or procurement specification.
What does SIST EN 14529:2006 specify?
SIST EN 14529:2006 specifies the requirements for escape-only compressed air breathing apparatus with a half mask, and it includes laboratory and practical performance tests to check compliance. The scope is limited to situations where the risk of overpressurisation of pressure vessels from hot environmental conditions is low.
SIST EN 14529:2006 does not apply to apparatus for work and rescue or to diving apparatus.
The document is organised into clauses on scope, references, terms and definitions, description, classification, requirements, testing, marking, and manufacturer information.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Methods of measuring insulation resistance of the carrying container |
| Annex B | Recommended marking of components and sub-assemblies |
| Annex ZA | Clauses linked to essential requirements of EU Directive 89/686/EEC |
| Annex ZB | Relationship with the Essential Requirements of EU Directive 97/23/EC (PED) |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 14529:2006?
SIST EN 14529:2006 classifies the apparatus by rated working duration. The class is based on a breathing machine test at 35 l/min, in steps of 5 minutes from 5 to 30 minutes. In practice, this is the escape-time class the buyer or user must select.
Design, safety and handling
Clause 6 requires the apparatus to function in any orientation, avoid sharp or protruding parts, and remain suitable for carrying and use in narrow passages. The ready-for-use state must show the pressure in the pressure vessel(s), and the half mask must be securely attached. The apparatus shall not include a supplementary supply, a second medium pressure connector, or an ambient air bypass.
Clause 6.8 and 6.9 require a harness or other carrying means that leaves the hands free and allows quick, easy donning, even in the dark or in restricted spaces. This matters because escape equipment has to be put on fast, without assistance.
Materials, mass and connections
Clause 6.4 requires corrosion protection for the carrying container and locking device, resistance to expected mechanical and thermal stress, and suitable materials for skin contact and breathable gas contact. Non-metal carrying containers must also control surface resistance to limit electrostatic charge.
Clause 6.6 sets mass limits for the complete apparatus, and Clause 6.7 requires components to be separable for cleaning, inspection and testing. Connections between the apparatus and the half mask must not be interchangeable with certain EN 148 thread types, which helps prevent wrong assembly.
Performance and protection
Clause 6.10 requires the ready-for-use apparatus to be leak tight. Clauses 6.12 and 6.23 cover temperature performance, flammability resistance, inhalation resistance, exhalation resistance, static pressure, and working duration. The practical meaning is that the apparatus must still work after temperature exposure, remain self-extinguishing where flame exposure is likely, and keep breathing resistance within the limits used for escape use.
Clauses 6.14 to 6.20 cover pressure parts, pressure vessels, pressure vessel seals, pressure reducers, pressure relief valves, and pressure indicators. These clauses prevent unsafe pressures, wrong vessel combinations, and accidental misuse.
Clause 6.25 requires practical performance tests under realistic conditions, so the apparatus is checked not only on test rigs but also in use scenarios.
What terms does SIST EN 14529:2006 define?
- Self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus - a breathing set that carries its own compressed air and expels exhaled air to the atmosphere instead of reusing it.
- Half mask - the facepiece worn by the user that covers the nose and mouth.
- Positive pressure lung governed demand valve - a demand valve that supplies air on inhalation while maintaining positive pressure in the mask.
- Rated working duration - the escape-time classification assigned to the apparatus after the breathing-machine test.
- Ready for use state - the condition in which the apparatus is prepared for immediate use and its pressure can be identified.
- Pressure vessel seal - the device or provision used to open the stored air supply.
Who uses SIST EN 14529:2006?
Manufacturers use SIST EN 14529:2006 to design the apparatus, choose materials, and plan type testing. Test houses and certification bodies use it for laboratory tests and practical performance tests.
Quality managers and buyers use it to write specifications for escape breathing apparatus and to check whether a product is escape-only, correctly classified, and marked. Safety managers in industry use it when selecting respiratory protection for workplaces where an escape device is needed rather than work-use or rescue-use apparatus.
What changed in SIST EN 14529:2006 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 14529:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 14529:2005.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 14529:2006?
- EN 132:1998 - defines terms and pictograms used across respiratory protective devices.
- EN 134:1998 - gives the nomenclature of components.
- EN 140:1998 - supplies half-mask requirements, testing, and marking.
- EN 148-1, EN 148-2, EN 148-3 - define facepiece thread connections.
- EN 12021 - specifies breathable compressed air quality.
- EN 13274-2, EN 13274-3, EN 13274-4, EN 13274-5 - provide practical performance tests, breathing resistance methods, flame tests, and climatic conditioning.
- EN 1964-1, EN 1964-2, EN 1964-3, EN 1975, EN 12245 - cover acceptable pressure vessel standards.
What does the SIST EN 14529:2006 document contain?
SIST EN 14529:2006 contains test procedures for visual inspection, pre-conditioning, mechanical strength, temperature resistance, leak tightness, pressure reducer behaviour, practical performance, and breathing resistance. It also includes figures for the vibration test rig, the insulation-resistance test piece, and the pressure-relief-valve test arrangement.
Annex A gives alternative methods for measuring insulation resistance of non-metal carrying containers, including voltmeter-ammeter and comparative methods. Annex B lists components and sub-assemblies that are recommended for marking, which helps traceability and spare-part identification. Annexes ZA and ZB connect the standard to EU directive requirements.
