Overview

EN ISO 4018:2022 - Fasteners - Hexagon head screws - Product grade C (ISO 4018:2022) is a CEN-endorsed international standard that defines the characteristics, dimensions and requirements for steel hexagon head screws with metric coarse pitch threads M5 to M64, specified as product grade C. The document harmonizes dimensional tables, marking and labelling rules, and references related mechanical and coating specifications for consistent manufacture, inspection and procurement across Europe and internationally.

Key Topics

  • Scope and range: Applies to steel hexagon head screws, metric coarse threads M5–M64, product grade C.
  • Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed dimensional tables (M5–M64) and figures for head, thread and underhead geometry; rules for incomplete thread (u ≤ 2P), optional washer-face and indentation.
  • Length rules: Defines shortest and greatest standard lengths; greatest standard length limited to 200 mm unless agreed otherwise.
  • Head forms and indentation: Permissible free-formed head shapes and optional head indentations added in this edition.
  • Marking and labelling: Clause 6 sets requirements for product marking and packaging labelling to ensure traceability and conformity.
  • Referenced standards & requirements: Integrates requirements from related ISO documents (e.g., ISO 898-1 for property classes, ISO 888/ISO 4753 for dimensional options, ISO 225, ISO 965-1, ISO 3269, ISO 4042, ISO 6157-1, ISO 10683, ISO 10684).
  • Edition changes: Fifth edition updates include addition of M7, restructured tables, tolerance adjustments for M5 head bearing surface, and new marking/labelling rules.

Applications

  • Manufacturers: Design and produce consistent, compliant hexagon head screws for inventory and OEM supply.
  • Engineers and designers: Specify appropriate fasteners (size, length, property class options) for mechanical assemblies, machinery, automotive, construction and general engineering.
  • Purchasing and quality: Use the standard for procurement specifications, acceptance inspection and traceability of supplied fasteners.
  • Testing and conformity: Laboratories and inspection bodies apply referenced testing and surface-coating standards for acceptance.

Related Standards (if applicable)

  • ISO 898-1 (mechanical properties/property classes)
  • ISO 888, ISO 4753 (nominal lengths / thread ends)
  • ISO 225, ISO 965-1 (dimensions and thread tolerances)
  • ISO 3269, ISO 6157-1 (inspection, surface discontinuities)
  • ISO 4042, ISO 10683, ISO 10684 (coating systems)

EN ISO 4018:2022 is essential for anyone specifying, manufacturing or inspecting metric hexagon head screws to ensure interchangeability, safety and supply-chain clarity.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso.org/patents).

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, Subcommittee SC 11,
Fasteners with metric external thread, in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization
(CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 185, Fasteners, in accordance with the Agreement on technical
cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition (ISO 4018:2011), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— the permissible shapes for free formed head and indentation on the head have been added;
— tables for dimensions have been restructured;
— M7 has been added;
— d has been changed for M5 from s – IT16 to s – IT15 (as for hexagon head screws of product
w,min min min
grades A and B) in order to have a larger bearing surface area and thus less contact pressure;
— the rules for the shortest and greatest standard lengths have been
