kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 is a European Standard from CEN for neck laceration protectors used in ice hockey. It specifies performance requirements and test methods for protectors worn by ice hockey players, including goalkeepers, and referees. The document is about reducing the risk of skate-blade laceration in the protected area, not about protection from puck, stick, or other impacts.

What does kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 specifies the performance requirements and test methods for neck laceration protectors for ice hockey. It sets out what the protector must cover, how it is checked, what information must accompany it, and how it is identified by type and size.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 8, plus Annex ZA.

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
  • Clause 4 - Requirements
  • Clause 5 - Test methods
  • Clause 6 - Test report
  • Clause 7 - Markings
  • Clause 8 - Information for users
  • Annex ZA - relationship with Regulation (EU) 2016/425

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026?

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 requires a neck laceration protector to be suitable for ice hockey use, to cover the defined protected area, and to keep that coverage after the stability and recovery test. In practice, this means the product has to work on the neck form used for verification, not just in a product description.

Types and intended coverage

Clause 4.1 defines two types: Type E1 with a bib and Type E2 without that bib shape. Clause 4.5 requires the protector to cover the protected area shown for its type. For manufacturers and buyers, this means the design family and the size range must be matched to the intended coverage.

Ergonomics and innocuousness

Clause 4.2 applies the ergonomics requirement from ISO 10256-1, and Clause 4.3 applies the general material requirement from ISO 10256-1. Clause 4.3.2 adds design checks: the protector must not harm the wearer or other players in normal use, it must have no removable parts in the protected area, and any size-adjustment system must work across the stated range. This matters because the product must be safe to wear in motion and not create new hazards.

Stability and cut resistance

Clause 4.6 requires the cut-resistant material to recover after being pushed down so it still covers the protected area. Clause 4.7 requires the normalized cutting stroke length in cut-resistance testing to be greater than 20 mm. In practice, the protector has to stay in place during use and resist blade cutting at the defined test location.

Sampling and conditioning

Clause 5.1.2 requires new, complete protectors of every size and model to be tested. Samples 2 and 3 are washed three times before testing, then dried and conditioned before test. This matters because the standard checks both unused and laundered condition, so manufacturers need to verify performance after normal cleaning.

Test methods and reporting

Clauses 5.2 to 5.6 link the tests to ISO 10256-1, ISO 6330, and ISO 13997, with specific modifications for protected-area checking and cut resistance verification. Clause 6 requires the test report to include the data recorded in the tests. That gives labs and certification teams a clear trace of how compliance was demonstrated.

Markings and user information

Clause 7 requires the product designation “neck laceration protector for ice hockey players” and the size or size range by minimum and maximum neck circumference. Clause 8 requires warnings that the protector only reduces the risk of direct laceration from a skate blade in the protected area, that fit and maintenance matter, and that Type E2 provides only partial neck protection.

What terms does kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 define?

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 defines several product and test terms used throughout the document.

  • neck form - a solid or hollow object, defined by shape and size, used to support the protector during tests.
  • bib - the part of the protector that lies over the anterior thoracic region.
  • median plane - the vertical plane passing through the centre of the neck form from front to back.
  • model - a category of protector with the same essential characteristics, available in multiple sizes.
  • neck laceration protector - a cut-resistant device worn to reduce the risk of laceration from skate blades in the protected area.
  • neck part - the part that surrounds the cylindrical portion of the neck form.

Who uses kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026?

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 is used by manufacturers of ice hockey protective equipment, test laboratories, conformity assessment bodies, and product quality teams. It is also useful for buyers and specifiers who need to check that a protector is the correct type, size, and marked with the right user information. In practice, it supports product design, laboratory testing, labeling review, and procurement decisions.

What changed in kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 from the previous edition?

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 replaces ISO 10256-5:2017 and is described as technically revised. The stated changes include revised definitions in Clause 3, added type descriptions in Clause 4.1, changes to Clause 4.3.2, a new stability and recovery requirement in Clause 4.6, clarification of cut resistance in Clause 4.7, updated sample preparation in Clause 5.1.2.3, and clarifications in Clauses 5.5 and 5.6. Table 2 was also revised, including a small neck form for smaller protector sizes.

Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026?

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 refers to ISO 6330:2021 for textile washing and drying procedures, which is used to condition test samples. It refers to ISO 13997:2023 for the cut-resistance method used in Clause 5.6. It also relies on ISO 10256-1:2024 for the general requirements, tolerances, conditioning, ergonomics, innocuousness, markings, user information, and several test methods.

What does the kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 document contain?

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 contains two protector types, test specimen rules, and detailed procedures for checking coverage, stability, recovery, and cut resistance. It includes Figure 1 and Figure 2 for the neck forms and protected areas, Table 1 for test specimens, and Table 2 for neck form dimensions and protected-area dimensions. The document also contains the test report requirements, marking requirements, user information requirements, and Annex ZA linking the European Standard to Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

Introduction
Ice hockey is a high speed, collision sport in which there is a risk of injury.
By playing this sport, participants accept the risk of serious injury, paralysis and/or death.
The intention of neck protection used in ice hockey is to reduce the frequency and severity of lacerations to
the neck. The protective function is such that the penetration of a skate blade is counteracted.
