EN 2591-227:2015 - Partial discharges test (Aerospace series)

Overview

EN 2591-227:2015 specifies test methods to measure partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV), partial discharge extinction voltage (PDEV) and partial discharge (PD) levels for electrical connectors used in aircraft. Intended for connectors exposed to specified combinations of temperature and low pressure (aircraft environments), this standard is to be used together with EN 2591-100 (general test methods). The goal is to identify PD behaviour that can reduce insulation performance and service life in aerospace electrical connections.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to connectors used in un‑pressurized areas.
    • Test specimens are plugs or receptacles representative of EN 3155 contacts.
  • Test sensitivity and equipment
    • PD detection equipment must detect PD pulses of 5 pC or less.
    • Test frequency generally 48–62 Hz unless otherwise specified.
    • Apparatus must be able to reproduce combinations of low pressure and high temperature (climatic chamber + vacuum pump).
  • Test configurations
    • Method A (Un‑mated): Tests plug or receptacle un‑mated to ensure internal cavities are at ambient test pressure.
    • Method B (Mated): Tests mated connectors with specific guidance (drilled contacts or removal of sealing sleeves) to ensure cavity pressure balance.
  • Wiring and measurement practices
    • Use high‑voltage qualified wires (EN 2267‑012 recommended).
    • Use high‑immunity (shielded) cables inside chamber; avoid gripping devices (e.g., crocodile clips) and cable outlets that could introduce PD.
  • Procedure
    • Stabilize temperature and pressure per technical specification, apply test voltage, record PDIV and PDEV; repeat sequence to obtain up to 10 measurements per cavity.
    • PDIV/PDEV pass criteria: thresholds must exceed values specified in the product technical specification.
    • Safety warning: lethal voltages may be present; follow safe work procedures.
  • Reporting
    • Report test method (A/B), wiring type, specimen/cavity IDs, air pressure, temperature, PDIV, PD level at PDIV, PDEV and pass/fail status.

Practical applications and users

  • Ensures connector insulation integrity and life expectancy in aircraft electrical systems.
  • Used by:
    • Aerospace connector manufacturers (design validation and qualification)
    • Test laboratories performing environmental and high‑voltage testing
    • Aircraft system integrators and quality/acceptance engineers
    • Certification bodies evaluating connector suitability for un‑pressurized zones (e.g., engine bay, avionics areas)
  • Helps identify design issues such as inadequate contact spacing, voids in insulation, or leakage paths that cause PD.
