Overview

EN 2283:2010 (CEN) is the European aerospace standard for testing finished aircraft wiring assemblies. It specifies the test regime and verification requirements for wiring, connectors and associated accessories used in aircraft electrical systems. The standard focuses on practical acceptance checks that ensure circuit continuity, dielectric strength and insulation resistance before equipment connection, after installation and following repairs.

Why this matters: consistent wiring tests reduce the risk of in-service electrical faults, improve safety and support regulatory compliance for production, installation and maintenance activities.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Tests apply to finished wiring including connectors, terminals, junction boxes and circuit breakers. Equipment installed in aircraft systems is excluded from the wiring tests.
  • Primary tests:
    • Continuity - verifies conductor routing and connections; DC or AC test voltage limited to safe values (see EN 2283 for permitted limits).
    • Dielectric strength - confirms insulation can withstand specified voltages; procedures address voltage rise rate, leakage current thresholds and discharge practices after testing.
    • Insulation resistance - measures insulation integrity using DC voltages (50 V to 500 V) and requires stabilization before reading.
  • Test categories: Wiring is classified in categories (A, B, C) depending on system function and installation state; Table 2 in EN 2283 defines the applicable voltages, minimum insulation resistance and application times for Part I (post-manufacture) and Part II (post-installation).
  • Test preparation: Screened/coaxial cables, connector shells and junction box components have specific handling instructions. Electronic devices must be disconnected or short-circuited to prevent damage.
  • Safety and equipment: Tests must comply with national safety regulations. Test equipment is often automated and may combine dielectric and insulation resistance checks.
  • Test report: Required details include environmental humidity, measured values, procedures used, test equipment and any defects or deviations found.

Applications

  • Production acceptance testing of looms and harnesses prior to installation
  • Post-installation verification of assembled bundles in aircraft
  • After-repair and modification verification and in-service inspections
  • Quality assurance for aerospace manufacturers, installers and maintenance organizations

The standard supports automated test systems and manual checks, enabling integration into production and maintenance workflows.
