Overview
SIST EN IEC 62841-2-18:2026/A11:2026 is a European amendment standard that outlines specific safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held strapping tools. Issued by CENELEC (CLC), this standard modifies the original EN IEC 62841-2-18 to ensure greater safety and conformity for manufacturers and users of hand-held strapping tools, which are widely used in packaging, logistics, and industrial applications. It also aligns with essential requirements from the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, supporting product compliance and market access across Europe.
Key Topics
This amendment introduces important changes and clarifications related to:
Noise and Vibration Emissions
The standard specifies how to measure noise and vibration emissions for hand-held strapping tools. It prescribes test cycles and tool orientations, ensuring consistent and reliable results that enhance workplace safety for tool operators.Battery Tools and Battery Packs
Modifications to Annex K and Annex L require battery-powered strapping tools to be equipped with robust isolation or disabling devices. This increases user safety during servicing or maintenance and reduces the risk of accidental tool activation.Normative References
Annex ZA provides up-to-date references to related international and European standards, establishing a unified framework for compliance.EU Machinery Directive Alignment
Annex ZZ details the relationship between the standard and the essential safety requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC. This ensures manufacturers who comply with this standard benefit from a presumption of conformity with EU legal obligations.
Applications
SIST EN IEC 62841-2-18:2026/A11:2026 applies to a wide range of electric hand-held strapping tools used for securing packages with straps in sectors such as:
- Warehousing and Logistics: Enhancing safety in high-throughput environments by ensuring tools meet rigorous operational and maintenance standards.
- Manufacturing: Supporting compliance in automated or semi-automated packaging lines where safety and reliability are critical.
- Construction and Industry: Reducing risks associated with the regular use of portable strapping equipment on site.
- Battery-Operated Tool Design: Ensuring that tools with integrated power sources feature clear and effective safety features, including isolation mechanisms and lock-off devices.
By implementing these amendments, manufacturers can improve their tool designs, reduce liability, and assure EU buyers and regulators of compliance with state-of-the-art safety standards.
Related Standards
To fully understand compliance obligations and technical requirements, manufacturers and users should also consult:
- EN 62841-1:2015 – Electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery – Safety – General requirements (with its amendments).
