Overview
prEN ISO 26082-1 (ISO/DIS 26082-1:2025) - published via CEN/ISO as a draft - specifies a standardized rubbing (Martindale) method for assessing the resistance of all forms of leather to visible soiling caused by repeated contact with soiled objects. The document covers a full test workflow: sampling, conditioning, optional pretreatment to simulate wear, the Martindale soiling procedure, and optional cleaning after‑treatment to evaluate residual soiling. The method includes use of a standard soiling cloth (impregnated with carbon black and olive oil by default) and gives requirements for apparatus, test piece mounting and evaluation of colour change.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principle: Quantifies change in leather colour after controlled rubbing with a soiling cloth; a pretreatment routine is provided for leathers that may lose soiling resistance in service.
- Apparatus: Martindale abrasion machine (ISO 12947‑1), specific holder heads (abrasion and pilling types), foam/wool underlays, circular cutters and optional rub‑fastness tester (ISO 11640).
- Test parameters: Specified loading assemblies to achieve nominal pressures (example: ~12 kPa for abrasion holder), Lissajous stroke setting (≈60 mm), and defined sample diameters (≥140 mm and ≥38 mm options).
- Soiling cloth and reagents: Standard soilant mix (carbon black + olive oil) and alternatives by client specification; cleaning solution defined as 0.5% sodium lauryl ether sulfate for after‑treatment.
- Sampling & conditioning: Conditioning of test pieces per ISO 2419 and specimen selection per ISO 2418.
- Evaluation: Visual grey scale (ISO 105‑A02) or instrumental colour measurement (ISO 105‑A05); guidance on test reporting and optional automated/manual cleaning procedures.
Applications and users
- Quality control and R&D in tanneries and leather goods manufacturers (footwear, upholstery, automotive, fashion).
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies assessing soiling resistance, cleanability and service performance of coated and uncoated leathers.
- Product designers, specifiers and procurement teams requiring objective performance data for materials selection and warranty claims.
- Regulators and standards committees referencing standardized test methods for labelling or compliance.
Practical value
- Provides reproducible, industry‑accepted test conditions for comparing materials, validating treatments (finishes, coatings) and developing cleaning recommendations.
- Enables manufacturers to simulate in‑service wear and measure residual staining after cleaning, improving product durability and customer guidance.
Related standards
- ISO 2418, ISO 2419, ISO 7906, ISO 11640, ISO 12945‑2, ISO 12947‑1, ISO 105 series (A02, A05, F09).

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

IULTCS, originally formed in 1897, is a world-wide organization of professional leather societies to further
the advancement of leather science and technology. IULTCS has three Commissions, which are responsible
for establishing international methods for sampling and the testing of leather. ISO recognizes IULTCS as an
international standardizing body for the preparation of test methods for leather

Technologists and Chemists Societies (IUP Commission, IULTCS) in collaboration with the European
Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 289, Leather, the secretariat of which
is held by UNI, in accordance with the agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna
Agreement).
