Overview

The oSIST prEN ISO 16122-2:2011 standard, titled "Agricultural and forestry machinery - Inspection of sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors in use - Part 2: Horizontal boom sprayers and similar," is a European Standard developed by CEN in collaboration with ISO. This standard specifies the requirements and verification methods for inspecting horizontal boom sprayers and similar machinery used for field crop spraying. It primarily addresses safety considerations for the test operator, environmental protection from contamination, and optimization of application efficiency.

This standard replaces EN 13790-1:2003 and supports the essential requirements of relevant EU directives. It focuses on ensuring the operational condition and performance of sprayers, particularly those with horizontal boom configurations, widely used in agricultural spraying of pesticides and liquid fertilizers.

Key Topics

  • Pump Performance
Requirements include pump capacity, pulsations, air chamber functionality, and leakage detection to ensure efficient and safe pumping of spray liquids.

  • Agitation Systems
Both hydraulic and mechanical agitation need to be checked to guarantee proper mixing and homogenization of spray liquids within the tank.

  • Spray Liquid Tank
Verification involves tank leakages, lid integrity, strainers, induction hopper, pressure compensation, liquid level indicators, emptying devices, non-return valves, and cleaning systems to secure safe storage and handling of liquids.

  • Measuring and Regulation Systems
Includes controls and instrumentation for accurate spray liquid delivery and flow regulation.

  • Pipes and Hoses
Inspections for leakages, bending, and abrasion to maintain system reliability and prevent environmental contamination.

  • Filtering Systems
Presence, isolation capability, and replaceability of filters are evaluated to avoid nozzle clogging or contamination.

  • Spray Boom Requirements
Focus on stability, alignment, automatic resetting, nozzle spacing, nozzle positioning, contamination prevention, nozzle damage protection, boom section controls, height adjustment, slope compensation, damping, and pressure stability.

  • Nozzle Functionality
Inspection for nozzle uniformity, similarity, prevention of dripping, and correct transverse spray distribution across the sprayed area.

  • Test Methods
Detailed procedures for pump capacity measurement, pressure indicator verification, flow meter calibrations, transverse distribution measurement using patternators, and measurement of pressure drop and variation during operation.

Applications

The oSIST prEN ISO 16122-2:2011 standard is crucial for:

  • Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers
To design, produce, and verify sprayers that comply with safety and environmental regulations, ensuring reliable and efficient operation in field conditions.

  • Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Providers
To conduct thorough checks on in-use horizontal boom sprayers, identifying potential safety hazards, leakage risks, and application inconsistencies.

  • Farm Operators and Contractors
To ensure their spraying equipment adheres to industry standards for safe handling, environmental protection, and effective crop treatment.

  • Regulatory Authorities
To establish uniform inspection protocols for the approval and certification of agricultural sprayers under EU directives and environmental safety legislation.

Related Standards

  • EN 13790-1:2003
The previous European Standard for inspection of crop sprayers, superseded by oSIST prEN ISO 16122-2:2011.

  • ISO 16122-1
Part 1 of the ISO 16122 series, addressing inspection methods for other types of sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors.

  • EU Directive 2009/128/EC
European legislation on the sustainable use of pesticides, with which this standard aids in compliance, especially regarding environmental protection.

ISO/DIS 16122-2
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be repr esented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of techni cal committees is to prep are International Standards. Draft International Standa rds
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the p ossibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 16122-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 23, Tractors and machinery for agriculture and
forestry, Subcommittee SC 6, and by Techni cal Committee CEN/TC 144, Tractors and machinery for
agriculture and forestry in collaboration.
ISO 16122 consists of the following parts, under the general title Agricultural and forestry machines —
Inspection of sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors in use:
⎯ Part 1: General
⎯ Part 2: Horizontal boom sprayers and similar
⎯ Part 3: Sprayers for bushes and tree crops and similar.
Fixed and semi-mobile sprayers are to form the subject of a future Part 4.

ISO/DIS 16122-2
Introduction
There are two main reasons for the inspection:
⎯ less potential risk of environmental contamination by crop protection products;
⎯ good control of the pest with the minimum possible input of crop protection product.
In order to use crop protection products in agricultural production safely, it is ne cessary to define the
requirements and test methods for sp rayers in use. Th is is a relevant step after having standa rdized the
requirements for new eq uipment, in respect of safety hazards (see ISO 4 254-6) and potential risks of
1)
environmental contamination (see ISO 16119 Parts 1 to 3 ).
Standardising the requirements and methods for inspection of sprayers in use, takes into consideration not
only the original performance of the spraying equipment, but also its use, care and maintenance. This is the
logical link between new equipment of good quality and well educated and concerned users.
The inspection of sprayers in use can be done on a voluntary or mandatory basis. In both cases further official
or legal specifications are necessary, e.g. on th e execution management of the in spection, which
organizations are authorized to carry out the insp ection, time intervals between inspections etc. As the
specifications of this International Standard are based on ISO 4254-6 and ISO 16119, it may be the case that
sprayers in use which were produced before ISO 4254-6 and ISO 16119 were published do not fulfil all the
specifications given in this International Standard.
During recent years, several countries have developed systems for inspection of horizontal boom sprayers in
use Developments in this direction ha ve been stimulated by public co ncern about risks, and the aim of
reducing the use of crop protection products.
