Overview
EN ISO 28139:2021/A1:2024 is Amendment 1 to the European adoption of ISO 28139 (knapsack combustion engine‑driven airblast sprayers). Published by CEN in 2024, this type‑C standard defines safety and environmental requirements and test methods for portable, engine‑driven knapsack airblast sprayers used in crop protection. It is intended to support conformity with the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC, as amended) and provides presumption of conformity when its normative clauses are respected.
Key topics and technical requirements
The amendment updates and clarifies requirements and test methods without introducing new numeric limits. Key technical topics include:
- Scope and classification
- Confirms the document as a type‑C standard (ISO 12100:2010) for machine‑specific risk reduction.
- Normative references
- Aligns referenced test and measurement methods with current standards (e.g., ISO 22867/22868 for vibration and noise, ISO 14982 for electromagnetic immunity, ISO 19932 parts 1 and 2 for knapsack sprayers).
- Design and safety requirements
- Machine design must follow ISO 12100 risk‑reduction principles and meet specific protective measures in the standard.
- Air tube retention: the air tube shall not be detachable without a tool unless safe access criteria are met.
- Safety distances for guards/openings to comply with ISO 13857.
- Design to allow the operator to pick up, carry and set down the filled sprayer without spillage and to carry it upright.
- Seals/gaskets must remain seated during normal use to prevent leaks.
- Test and measurement methods
- Leakage and filling checks per ISO 19932‑2.
- Vibration testing following ISO 22867 measurement conditions (with Annex E guidance).
- Noise emission reporting per ISO 22868, including A‑weighted sound pressure and sound power levels.
- Electromagnetic immunity testing per ISO 14982.
- Documentation and marking
- Instructions, warnings and marking requirements to support safe operation and maintenance and to meet Machinery Directive obligations.
Applications and users
This standard is practical for:
- Manufacturers and designers of knapsack combustion engine‑driven airblast sprayers - to design compliant, safe products.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors - to perform required vibration, noise, EMC and leakage tests.
- Regulatory bodies and notified bodies - for assessing conformity with the Machinery Directive and pesticide‑application requirements.
- Procurement specialists, trainers and maintenance teams - to understand safety features, handling and inspection expectations.
Related standards
Relevant normative references cited by the amendment include:
- ISO 12100, ISO 19932‑1 / 19932‑2, ISO 22867, ISO 22868, ISO 14982, ISO 13857, ISO 5681, and others addressing symbols, signs and filters.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
