Overview

prEN 3475-505:2025 (draft) is a CEN/AES aerospace test-method standard that defines a method for measuring the tensile properties of conductors and strands used in aircraft electrical cables. It covers stranded conductors, single strands, solid conductors and braids, and can be applied to insulated wires and cables after insulation removal. The document is intended to be used together with EN 3475-100 (general test-method requirements) and will supersede EN 3475-505:2023.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Tensile testing of stranded conductors, single strands, solid conductors and braids for aerospace electrical cables.
  • Test apparatus:
    • Tensile tester with load/elongation accuracy of ±1%.
    • Pulling speed: 50 ± 10 mm/min.
    • Initial gauge length between jaws: 250 ± 5 mm.
    • Jaws designed to produce rupture mid-specimen; fracture not closer than 25 mm to either jaw.
  • Specimen preparation:
    • Remove insulation when required.
    • Remove slack prior to testing; apply a preload for braids to tighten strands.
    • For braid testing, cable jacket must be stripped over a minimum 500 mm without damaging shield strands.
  • Sampling and reporting:
    • Generally three samples per size for repeatability.
    • Stranded conductors:
      • For cross-sections ≤ 9 mm²: test whole conductor; report average elongation at break (%) and breaking load (N). Breaking load measured at the first strand breaking.
      • For cross-sections > 9 mm²: test three strands from each stranding layer (inner/intermediate/outer) or group; report average elongation at break (%) and tensile strength (N/mm²).
      • Qualification testing may require strand tests per product standard.
    • Single strand / solid conductors: report average elongation at break (%), breaking load (N) and tensile strength (N/mm²).
    • Braids: pull-off and test whole braid from three samples; report average elongation, load and tensile strength.
  • Conformance: Measured values (elongation, load, tensile strength, yield where required) must meet the applicable product standard limits.

Applications and users

This standard is essential for:

  • Aerospace cable manufacturers (design, production QC)
  • Test laboratories performing tensile characterization of aircraft conductors and braids
  • Procurement and quality engineers specifying cable acceptance criteria
  • Certification bodies and compliance auditors verifying mechanical properties of electrical conductors for aircraft systems

Use prEN 3475-505 to ensure consistent, repeatable tensile test results for aerospace-grade conductors and to demonstrate conformity with product specifications.

Related standards

  • EN 3475-505:2023 - previous edition (to be superseded)
  • ASD‑STAN / CEN procedural documents for European aerospace standardization

For accurate implementation, follow the specimen, apparatus and reporting rules in prEN 3475-505 and pair tests with EN 3475-100 requirements.
