Overview
EN 15254-2:2009 - "Extended application of results from fire resistance tests - Non-loadbearing walls - Part 2: Masonry and Gypsum Blocks" (CEN) provides guidance and defined procedures for applying fire resistance test results (per EN 1364-1) to variations in products and construction parameters for internal and external non-loadbearing walls built from clay, calcium silicate, aggregate concrete, autoclaved aerated concrete units and gypsum blocks. Manufactured stone masonry units (EN 771-5) are excluded.
This standard enables the extended application of a reference fire test to similar wall constructions, helping avoid unnecessary re-testing while ensuring reliable fire resistance classification (EI, E, E‑W, EI‑M).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limitations:
- Applies only to the same type of material (e.g., clay unit results cannot be used for concrete units).
- Excludes manufactured stone (EN 771-5).
- Rules for units and geometry:
- Conditions for extrapolation based on unit type, percentage of voids, shell and web thickness, combined thickness, unit height/length/width, and wall thickness.
- Specific density and compressive strength ranges and rounding rules for using test results for other unit densities and strengths.
- Mortar and joint criteria:
- Guidance for mortar types (general purpose, thin-layer, lightweight) and for filled vs unfilled perpend joints.
- Test results are typically valid for mortars with equal or greater compressive strength than tested; lightweight mortar provisions are specified.
- Influence of finishes and connections:
- Consideration of plaster/render/external coverings and connection systems in extended application.
- Test data and measurements:
- Use of reference tests (EN 1364-1) and acceptable historic test data under defined conditions.
- Recommended additional measurements: mid-height deflection, gross dry density, compressive strength, moisture content, void percentage and thermocouple placement for future structural fire design calculations.
Applications and users
- Useful for:
- Fire safety engineers and structural designers applying fire resistance classifications to masonry or gypsum block partitions and façades.
- Manufacturers and product developers seeking to declare fire performance for product variants without full re-testing.
- Notified test laboratories and certification bodies evaluating extended application claims.
- Building authorities and spec writers verifying compliance with fire performance requirements.
- Practical value:
- Reduces cost/time by allowing justified extrapolation from a reference test.
- Provides transparent rules for when a new reference test is required.
