Overview

CEN/TS 17787:2022 provides the normative references and framework for determining the stability of chelating and complexing agents used in inorganic micronutrient fertilizers. It supports conformity with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 by defining which analytical methods should be used to evaluate component material category CMC 1 for product function category PFC 1(C)(II). The Technical Specification applies to micronutrient chelates, complexes and their mixtures in powder, granular, aqueous or suspension forms.

This CEN Technical Specification was approved for provisional application in 2022 and is intended to guide laboratories, manufacturers and conformity assessment bodies on method selection and sampling practices.

Key Topics

  • Scope and purpose: Identifies references to specific test methods for assessing the stability of chelating and complexing agents in inorganic micronutrient fertilizers, ensuring reliable long-term nutrient availability.

  • Referenced test methods: Stability of micronutrient chelates is determined according to CEN/TS 17782:2022; stability of micronutrient complexes is determined according to CEN/TS 17783:2022. Those CEN/TS documents are normative references for analytical procedures.

  • Sampling and sample preparation: Sampling and sample preparation requirements are aligned with EN 1482-1:2007 and EN 1482-2:2007, ensuring representative and reproducible input material for stability testing.

  • Terms and definitions: Terminology follows EN 12944 (Parts 1 and 2) and common ISO/IEC terminological resources.

Applications

CEN/TS 17787:2022 is practical for:

  • Manufacturers of inorganic micronutrient fertilizers who must demonstrate compliance with EU fertilizing product rules (CMC 1, PFC 1(C)(II)).
  • Quality control laboratories establishing test programs to monitor chelating agent stability and complex stability across pH ranges and formulations.
  • Regulatory bodies and notified bodies assessing conformity with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009.

Benefits and practical value:

  • Ensures uniform method selection for stability determination, reducing variability between laboratories.
  • Supports product registration and market access within the EU by aligning testing with regulatory expectations.
  • Guides sampling and sample preparation to produce representative test results for powders, granules and liquid preparations.
