Overview

SIST EN ISO 21671:2006/A1:2011 is an important amendment to the European and International Standard ISO 21671:2006. Published by CEN in collaboration with ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 106 and CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry," this standard focuses on rotary polishers used in dentistry. The amendment was officially approved in April 2011 and aimed to update the original dental rotary polishers standard to enhance clarity, usability, and alignment with related international standards.

This amendment establishes specifications for grit size markings, introduces a standardized colour coding system for diamond-containing abrasives, and includes essential references to related ISO standards for dental rotary instruments. Its implementation ensures a consistent approach toward the classification and use of rotary polishers in dental practice, fostering safety, efficiency, and quality control across EU member states and beyond.

Key Topics

  • Grit Size Classification
The amendment refines the grit size classification system for polishing instruments, categorizing abrasives based on particle size in micrometers (µm). It defines six grit size levels:

    • Ultra fine (UF): 1 to 4 µm
    • Extra fine (EF): 4 to 8 µm
    • Fine (F): 8 to 32 µm
    • Medium (M): 32 to 69 µm
    • Coarse (C): 69 to 164 µm
    • Very coarse (VC): >164 µm
  • Colour Coding for Abrasives
A key enhancement is the adoption of a colour ring marking system for diamond-containing abrasives, aligning with ISO 7711-3:

    • Ultra fine (UF): White
    • Extra fine (EF): Yellow
    • Fine (F): Red
    • Medium (M): Blue
    • Coarse (C): Green
    • Very coarse (VC): Black
  • Reference Standards Integration
This amendment integrates essential references to other ISO standards related to abrasives and grit size testing, including ISO 7711-3, ISO 6106, and ISO 8486 parts 1 and 2. This facilitates comprehensive quality control in manufacturing and clinical usage of dental rotary polishers.

Applications

  • Dental Instrument Manufacturing
Manufacturers of rotary polishers must adhere to these specifications to ensure products meet international quality and safety requirements. The clearly defined grit sizes and colour codes simplify product labeling and classification.

  • Clinical Dentistry
Dental professionals rely on the standard to select appropriate rotary polishers tailored to specific polishing tasks, level of abrasiveness required, and patient safety. The standardized grit size identification improves consistency in clinical outcomes.

  • Quality Management and Compliance
Regulatory bodies and certification organizations use SIST EN ISO 21671:2006/A1:2011 to assess compliance of dental rotary polishing instruments. This helps dentists avoid substandard or incompatible instruments that might compromise treatment efficacy.

Related Standards

  • ISO 21671:2006 – Dentistry – Rotary polishers (Original standard)
  • ISO 7711-3 – Dentistry – Diamond rotary instruments – Grit sizes and colour coding
  • ISO 6106 – Abrasive products – Checking the grit size of superabrasives
  • ISO 8486-1 and ISO 8486-2 – Bonded abrasives – Grain size distribution for macrogrits and microgrits

Together, these standards create an integrated framework governing dental rotary polishing tools, promoting harmonized manufacturing, usage, and testing procedures internationally.
