Overview

EN ISO 10081-1:2005 (identical to ISO 10081-1:2003) defines the classification and designation system for dense shaped refractory products of the alumina‑silica series. Published by CEN as a European adoption of the ISO text, it standardizes how alumina‑silica refractories are grouped and labelled for specification, procurement and quality control. The standard excludes products that contain >5% metallic oxides other than Al2O3, SiO2 or Fe2O3, and products containing >1% carbon or carbon‑based materials.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and exclusions
    • Applies to dense shaped alumina‑silica refractory products; excludes certain metal‑oxide and carbon‑containing products.
  • Five classification criteria
    • Type of product (high alumina HA, fireclay FC, low alumina fireclay LF, siliceous SS, silica SL).
    • Classification group based on alumina (Al2O3) and/or silica (SiO2) content (e.g., HA 98, HA 75, FC 40, SL 93).
    • Principal raw material(s) - named when ≥50% or the two main materials when <50% (examples: corundum, bauxite, mullite, sillimanite, fireclay, quartzite).
    • State of raw materials - naturally occurring (raw or calcined), synthetic calcined, or fused.
    • Nature of the bond - ceramic bond (sintering >800 °C), inorganic chemical bond (reaction at ≤800 °C; may be tempered), or fusion‑cast (total fusion).
  • Designation format
    • A product designation lists the five criteria: product type + group + raw material(s) + raw material state + bond type.
    • Examples in the standard illustrate typical designations (e.g., “high alumina HA 75, based on fused mullite, ceramic bond”).

Applications and users

  • Who uses it
    • Refractory manufacturers, materials engineers, quality managers, procurement/specification teams, and standards bodies.
  • Practical uses
    • Standardized specification of refractory bricks, shapes and linings for high‑temperature industries (steel, glass, cement, petrochemical, ceramics).
    • Communication of composition and performance‑relevant attributes between suppliers and end users.
    • Basis for ordering, inventory classification, and compliance documentation in projects requiring controlled refractory properties.

Related standards

  • ISO 10081 series (Parts 2 and 3 cover basic products with varying residual carbon content; Part 4 planned for special products).
  • EN 12475-1:1998 (superseded by EN ISO 10081-1:2005).
  • Historical reference: ISO 1109:1975 (partially replaced by this series).

Keywords: EN ISO 10081-1:2005, classification of dense shaped refractory products, alumina‑silica, refractory product designation, ceramic bond, fusion cast, fireclay, high alumina.
