Overview

SIST EN 16842-5:2021 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies test methods and verification requirements for the 360° visibility of sit-on self-propelled industrial variable-reach trucks with a capacity greater than 10,000 kg, in accordance with ISO 5053-1. This standard addresses key visibility safety aspects to ensure operators have clear sight lines around heavy industrial trucks when operated without a load. It is intended to be used in combination with EN 16842-1, which covers general visibility requirements for powered industrial trucks.

Unlike other parts of the EN 16842 series that cover trucks up to 10,000 kg capacity, Part 5 handles the larger capacity trucks. It focuses on significant hazards related to operator visibility during normal use and foreseeable misuse scenarios. Notably, rough-terrain variable-reach trucks are excluded from this standard’s scope (refer to EN 15830 for those trucks).

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
EN 16842-5 applies exclusively to sit-on self-propelled industrial variable-reach trucks with rated capacity exceeding 10,000 kg. It complements the general requirements in EN 16842-1 but specifies truck-specific deviations as necessary.

  • Truck Configuration for Testing
Test conditions include fixed parameters such as the height of the load-carrying surface (up to 500 mm above floor) and specified fork arm lengths based on load center (e.g., 1200 mm, 1800 mm, 2400 mm). Telescopic or reach booms must be fully retracted during tests to reflect typical operating configurations.

  • Test Procedures

    • Direct Visibility: Evaluated using test paths laid out around the vehicle, with lighting positioned relative to the seat index point (SIP) to simulate operator perspective.
    • Indirect Visibility: Assessed according to procedures in EN 16842-1, addressing auxiliary viewing aids and mirrors.
  • Acceptance Criteria
Measured visibility is quantified in terms of minimum illuminated areas of test surfaces positioned at key points around the truck. Each test path has specific spatial and lighting requirements to verify clear operator line of sight. The illuminated areas must exceed 10,000 mm² with no less than 50 mm in any dimension.

  • Test Reporting and Information for Use
Standardized test reports document visibility performance covering all test scenarios. Manufacturers are also required to provide operational guidance regarding visibility limitations when loads or attachments restrict the operator’s sight, as mandated by EN ISO 3691-2.

Applications

SIST EN 16842-5:2021 serves as a crucial reference for:

  • Industrial truck manufacturers ensuring their variable-reach trucks above 10,000 kg meet stringent visibility safety standards before market release.
  • Regulatory bodies and health and safety organizations overseeing workplace equipment safety compliance.
  • Workplace safety managers and operators seeking clarity on visibility requirements for safe operation of heavy industrial trucks.
  • Testing laboratories and certification bodies conducting visibility verification and compliance testing according to harmonized European standards.

By adhering to EN 16842-5, users can reduce risks associated with limited visibility, such as collisions and accidents in warehouses, logistics hubs, and industrial facilities handling heavy loads.

Related Standards

EN 16842-5 is part of a comprehensive visibility testing series for powered industrial trucks, including:

  • EN 16842-1:2018 – General visibility requirements and test methods for powered industrial trucks.
  • EN 16842-2 – Sit-on counterbalance and rough terrain trucks up to 10,000 kg capacity.
  • EN 16842-3 – Reach trucks up to 10,000 kg capacity.
  • EN 16842-4 – Variable-reach trucks up to 10,000 kg capacity.
  • EN 16842-6 – Sit-on counterbalance and rough terrain trucks greater than 10,000 kg capacity.
  • EN ISO 3691-2:2016 – Safety requirements and verification for self-propelled variable-reach trucks.

For rough-terrain variable-reach trucks, the requirements are covered under EN 15830.
