Overview
EN ISO 9168:2009 - Dentistry: Hose connectors for air driven dental handpieces (ISO 9168:2009) defines standardized hose connector types and requirements to ensure reliable interchangeability between dental unit hoses and air‑driven dental handpieces. The standard specifies dimensional, mechanical and reprocessing requirements for four connector types used to convey water, drive air, spray air, light (fibre optics) and exhaust - supporting safe, compatible connections across manufacturers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Connector classification: Four types are defined:
- Type 1: two or three outlets; thread 9/16 – 40 UNS
- Type 2: four or five outlets; thread 0.555 – 36 UNS (may include fibre optic)
- Type 3: four outlets with electrical contacts; thread 0.555 – 36 UNS
- Type 4: three outlets; thread M12 × 0.5 (ISO 261)
- Dimensional specification: Detailed outlet configurations and dimensions are given (figures and Table 1). Measurement accuracy for testing is ±0.01 mm (linear) and ±1° (angles).
- Thread characteristics: Thread major/minor/pitch diameters and pitches are specified; Types 1–3 use unified inch threads based on ANSI B1.1 parameters (table provides exact values).
- Resistance to reprocessing: Connectors must withstand at least 250 reprocessing cycles per the manufacturer’s instructions without deterioration in appearance or performance. Quick connectors not permanently fixed must meet ISO 7494‑1 requirements.
- Testing and sampling: One representative sample per connector type is tested. Tests cover dimensional conformity and reprocessing resistance with visual and functional inspection after sterilization cycles.
- Design guidance (informative): Ergonomic, easy‑to‑clean surfaces, secure gripping areas, and field‑serviceable construction are recommended.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Dental handpiece and dental unit manufacturers - implement connector designs that assure cross‑brand compatibility.
- Product designers and R&D teams - use dimensional and thread specs during component selection and prototyping.
- Procurement and supply chain - ensure purchased handpieces and hoses are interoperable.
- Service engineers and maintenance - follow reprocessing and inspection criteria for safe reuse.
- Regulatory and standards compliance teams - demonstrate conformity for market access and quality systems.
Practical uses include ensuring interchangeability of handpieces, reducing compatibility failures in clinics, and specifying connector requirements in technical product documentation.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9168 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 106, Dentistry, Subcommittee SC 4, Dental
instruments.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 9168:1991), which has been technically
revised. The following changes were made:
a) requirement resistance to sterilization has been replaced by reprocessing requirement;
b) language-independent figures;
c) introduction of definition for “hose connector” and updated references and Bibliography.
