Overview
ISO 11639:2010 - "Aerospace - Part numbering for hose assemblies" defines a standardized part-numbering and designation system for aerospace fluid-system hose assemblies. The standard enables consistent, compact, and unambiguous identification of hose assemblies across design, procurement, manufacturing, maintenance and logistic systems. It prescribes rules for part-number construction (15‑digit preferred, up to 20‑digit where necessary), basic standard numbers, dash numbers, and coded fields for size, length, fittings, orientation and options.
Key topics and requirements
- Part number length: Prefer a maximum of 15 digits; up to 20 digits allowed when needed to fully differentiate parts.
- Basic standard number: Recommended maximum of 7 digits for the stem (drawing/specification) number.
- Dash number: Defines individual part configurations; can be numeric, alphabetic, or mixed. Non‑significant dash numbers are sequential and carry no coded meaning.
- Size codes: Alphabetic codes map metric DN and imperial dash sizes (examples include codes for DN05/‑03, DN10/‑06, DN25/‑16, etc.).
- Assembly length codes:
- For 15‑digit numbers: three‑digit metric code (000–999 or A00–Y99 for lengths ≥1000 mm) or three digits in inches (two digits whole inches + 1/8‑inch increments).
- For 20‑digit numbers: four‑digit millimetre or inch codes.
- Length tolerances: Specified tolerances (e.g., ±3.2 mm for lengths under 0.46 m; ±1% for lengths ≥1.3 m), with imperial equivalents.
- Fitting codes: Thread type codes (e.g., M = metric, E = imperial) and configuration codes for fitting shapes.
- Orientation codes: Three‑digit orientation or letter codes map end‑coupling angles (alpha) for assemblies needing defined coupling orientation.
- Sleeving and option codes: Standard letter codes for abrasion/firesleeve types and options (e.g., A PTFE abrasion sleeve, B nylon spiral, C/J/H fire‑resistant sleeves, option L = tie wire holes).
- Formatting rules & limitations: No blanks; restricted letters (I, O, Q, X, Z not used); hyphen use rules; symbols generally prohibited; part revision letters excluded from the part number.
Applications and practical value
ISO 11639 is applied where precise, repeatable identification of hose assemblies is essential:
- Engineering design and configuration management for aircraft and spacecraft fluid systems
- Suppliers and manufacturers creating part catalogs and product databases
- Procurement, MRO, and supply‑chain traceability to support interchangeability and parts obsolescence control
- Automated inventory, ERP and PLM systems that require standardized coding for searchability and data exchange
Who should use it
- Aerospace designers and systems engineers
- Hose and fitting manufacturers and suppliers
- Procurement and logistics teams in OEMs and MRO organizations
- Quality, configuration management, and certification authorities
Related standards
ISO 11639 complements other aerospace and fluid‑system standards (e.g., standards on hose performance, fittings and installation practices). Implementers should align part numbering with applicable drawing/specification documents and organizational configuration rules.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 11639 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 20, Aircraft and space vehicles, Subcommittee
SC 10, Aerospace fluid systems and components.
