Overview
ISO 7364:2016 is an international standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the essential requirements and characteristics for ships' accommodation ladder winches. These winches-integral components of deck machinery-are used for the safe hoisting and lowering of accommodation ladders on ships. ISO 7364:2016 covers hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, or manual drives and applies specifically to the design, construction, and testing of these winches. However, it does not include requirements for the prime mover that powers the winch.
Developed under ISO/TC 8 (Ships and marine technology), this standard ensures consistent quality, safety, and performance across accommodation ladder winches worldwide, reflecting the latest advances since the first edition of 1983.
Key Topics
Design Requirements: ISO 7364:2016 specifies detailed design criteria including drum size, rope capacity, flange height, and the mechanical strength of winch components. Notably, winches must accommodate steel wire ropes compliant with ISO 2408 and ensure a minimum safety factor of five against holding load.
Types of Winches: The standard defines right-hand and left-hand winches, symmetrical double drum winches, and split drum configurations to suit different ship designs and operational needs.
Operational Features: Winches must have devices that hold the drum securely at 1.5 times the holding load and enable manual operation even for powered winches. Safety features like local emergency stops and protection against operator injury are mandatory.
Performance Characteristics: The standard mandates minimum hoisting speeds, capabilities to withstand overloads (1.5 times drum load for 2 minutes), and immediate stops on emergency activation to ensure operational safety and reliability.
Testing and Acceptance: ISO 7364:2016 outlines rigorous factory and onboard testing procedures such as no-load running tests, drum load tests, static tests at 1.5 holding load, and complete unit inspections. These tests verify compliance with all performance and safety requirements.
Designation: The standard provides a clear system for winch identification, incorporating drive type, nominal size, winch configuration, load limits, and manufacturing information, enabling traceability and compliance verification.
Applications
Shipbuilding and Marine Operations: ISO 7364:2016 applies to shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers designing or installing accommodation ladder winches. Ensuring these winches meet the standard improves safety for crew and passengers boarding or disembarking vessels.
Maritime Safety and Compliance: Shipping companies and classification societies use ISO 7364:2016 as a benchmark for inspecting and certifying accommodation ladder winches to international safety regulations.
Maintenance and Retrofit: Marine engineers and technicians use this standard to assess existing accommodation ladder winches for safety upgrades or replacement, aligning with current best practices and regulatory expectations.
Design Engineering: Naval architects and marine equipment designers rely on ISO 7364:2016 to develop winch systems that meet safety margins, durability, and usability requirements demanded by modern shipping operations.
Related Standards
ISO 2408: Specifies minimum requirements for steel wire ropes used in marine applications, essential for winch rope compatibility.
ISO 3828: Provides vocabulary and symbols for shipbuilding deck machinery, complementing terminology in ISO 7364.
ISO 5488:2015: Covers design and safety requirements of accommodation ladders themselves, which the winches operate.
IEC 60092-401: Addresses electrical installations on ships, including the installation and testing of electrical equipment on marine winches, ensuring electrical safety compliance.
By adhering to ISO 7364:2016, the maritime industry can standardize accommodation ladder winch design, enhance operational safety, and facilitate international trade by meeting recognized global benchmarks. This standard plays a critical role in safeguarding personnel access to vessels while supporting reliable and efficient shipboard operations.
