Overview

ISO 1167-2:2006 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It specifies the dimensions and preparation methods for test pieces made from thermoplastics pipes, fittings, and assemblies to assess their resistance to internal hydrostatic pressure. This part of ISO 1167 complements ISO 1167-1 by detailing how extruded or injection-moulded tubular specimens should be prepared for testing. The standard ensures consistent and reliable evaluation of the long-term durability and performance of thermoplastic piping systems used for conveying fluids.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
Defines preparation requirements for tubular test pieces used to determine the resistance of thermoplastics pipes to internal pressure, focusing on extrusion and injection moulding methods.

  • Types of Test Pieces

    • Extruded test pieces: Used for material and pipe testing.
    • Injection-moulded tubular test pieces: Used for testing injection moulding materials only, enabling evaluation of hydrostatic pressure resistance and time-related material behavior.
  • Test Piece Dimensions
Details on nominal outside diameter, wall thickness, and minimum free length requirements based on pipe diameter, ensuring standardized specimen size for accurate testing.

  • Apparatus and Measurement
Specifies necessary equipment for preparation and measurement of test pieces, including end caps, wall thickness gauges, and Pi-tape for measuring mean outside diameter in accordance with ISO 3126.

  • Measurement Standards
Highlights compliance with ISO 3126 for precision in determining wall thickness and outside diameter without rounding, which affects pressure calculations.

  • Test Report Requirements
Specifies the inclusion of method of manufacture-extrusion or injection moulding-and details consistent with ISO 1167-1 to support data integrity and reproducibility.

Applications

ISO 1167-2:2006 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance professionals involved in:

  • Thermoplastics Piping Systems
Verifying the durability and hydrostatic pressure resistance of plastic pipes and fittings used in water supply, gas distribution, wastewater systems, and industrial fluid conveyance.

  • Material Characterization
Understanding the long-term performance and minimum required strength (MRS) of thermoplastic materials via standardized test specimens, facilitating material classification per ISO 12162.

  • Injection Moulding Quality Control
Evaluating injection-moulded tubular specimens to monitor manufacturing process effects on material stress and pressure resistance.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Meeting international and national standards for piping components used in critical infrastructure, ensuring safety and reliability under pressure conditions.

  • Research and Development
Supporting product development and innovation by providing a consistent methodology to test new thermoplastic materials or manufacturing methods.

Related Standards

  • ISO 1167-1:2006Thermoplastics pipes, fittings and assemblies for the conveyance of fluids - Determination of the resistance to internal pressure - Part 1: General method
Establishes the overall testing methodology for internal pressure resistance.

  • ISO 3126Plastics piping systems - Plastics components - Determination of dimensions
Provides the measurement techniques and apparatus specifications used to determine test piece dimensions.

  • ISO 9080Plastics piping and ducting systems - Determination of long-term hydrostatic strength of thermoplastics pipe materials by extrapolation
Aids in interpreting test results to predict material performance over time.

  • ISO 12162Thermoplastics materials for pipes and fittings for pressure applications - Classification and designation
Defines classification and designation of thermoplastic materials based on long-term strength data.

Summary

ISO 1167-2:2006 delivers critical guidelines for preparing thermoplastic pipe test pieces to accurately evaluate their internal pressure resistance. By standardizing the dimensions and methods of specimen preparation-whether extruded or injection-moulded-it ensures that test results are reliable, comparable, and reproducible across industries. This standard plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and performance of fluid conveyance systems using thermoplastic materials worldwide, enabling stakeholders to meet stringent quality and regulatory requirements.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

ISO 1167-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 138, Plastics pipes, fittings and valves for the
transport of fluids, Subcommittee SC 5, General properties of pipes, fittings and valves of plastic materials and
their accessories — Test methods and basic specifications.
This first edition of ISO 1167-2, together with ISO 1167-1, cancels and replaces ISO 1167:1996 and, together
with ISO 1167-3, cancels and replaces ISO 12092:2000, of which it constitutes a technical revision.

Avant-propos
votants.
