Overview
ISO 1651:1974 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the general dimensions of tube drawing mandrels in relation to their diameter. Applicable to both brazed and sleeved drawing mandrels, this standard ensures uniformity and interchangeability in mandrel design. The dimensions in ISO 1651:1974 have been determined by taking existing industry practices into account to support compatibility and efficiency in tube drawing operations.
One of the key features of this standard is the inclusion of thread specifications in both metric and inch measurement systems. This dual-thread system facilitates the use of these mandrels on machines worldwide, regardless of local measurement preferences, underscoring the standard's global applicability.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
ISO 1651:1974 applies specifically to brazed drawing mandrels and sleeved drawing mandrels used in tube drawing processes. The standard defines critical dimensions such as diameter, thread dimensions, and tolerances.Types of Mandrels Covered
- Brazed Drawing Mandrels: Includes forms welded on rod, with female thread, and with male thread.
- Sleeved Drawing Mandrels: Covers mandrels with female and male threads, designed for varied tube drawing setups.
Dimension Specifications
The standard presents detailed dimension tables outlining the exact measurements necessary for mandrel manufacturing, ensuring compatibility across different machinery and operational requirements.Threading Standards
Threads are given in both metric (ISO metric threads) and inch (Unified National Coarse - UNC threads) systems. This international approach allows users to select mandrels compatible with their existing equipment without needing modification.Manufacturing Flexibility
Certain aspects such as the total length of mandrels and specific chamfer or radius details are left to the discretion of the manufacturer, allowing customization while maintaining overall conformity to the standard.
Applications
ISO 1651:1974 is vital in industries employing tube drawing technologies, such as:
Metal Fabrication and Tubing Manufacturing
Ensures that mandrels used in tube drawing machines meet consistent quality standards, facilitating reliable tube shaping and finishing processes.Automotive and Aerospace Industries
Enables production of precision tubes required for structural, fluid, and fuel line applications, where exact dimensions and surface quality are critical.Machining and Tool Engineering
Assists in the design and selection of tooling components that interact with tube drawing mandrels, improving machine tooling compatibility and maintenance.Global Manufacturing Operations
Supports multinational companies by providing a universal standard for mandrels, simplifying procurement and reducing equipment downtime associated with incompatible parts.
Related Standards
ISO 1651:1974 complements other international standards relevant to tube drawing and tooling, including but not limited to:
- ISO 3302 – Rubber Tolerances, relevant when dealing with mandrel coatings or sleeves.
- ISO 9001 – Quality Management Systems, ensuring consistent manufacturing quality of mandrels.
- ISO 228 – Thread Standards, which may be referred for detailed thread specifications beyond those cited in ISO 1651.
- Industry-specific standards for tubing and metal forming, which depend on precise tooling dimensions like those defined in ISO 1651.
ISO 1651:1974 remains a key reference for manufacturers, engineers, and quality professionals focused on maintaining precision, compatibility, and interchangeability in tube drawing mandrels. By adhering to its specifications, the industry benefits from smoother operations, reduced tool failure, and increased global machine compatibility.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation
of national Standards institutes (ISO Member Bodies). The work of developing
International Standards is carried out through ISO Technical Committees. Every
Member Body interested in a subject for which a Technical Committee has been set
up has the right to be represented on that Committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the Technical Committees are circulated
to the Member Bodies for approwal before their acceptance as International
Standards by the ISO Council.
Prior to 1972, the results of the work of the Technical Committees were published
as ISO Recommendations; these documents are now in the process of bein
transformed into International Standards. As part of this process, Technical
Committee ISO/TC 29 has reviewed ISO Recommendation R 1651 and found it
technically suitable for transformation. International Standard ISO 1651 therefore
replaces ISO Recommendation R 1651-1970 to which it is technicafly identical.
