Overview

ISO 4587:2003 is an internationally recognized standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a test method to determine the tensile lap-shear strength of rigid-to-rigid bonded assemblies. This method involves using a standard specimen under strictly controlled preparation and testing conditions to measure the strength of adhesive bonds between rigid materials. While it is widely applied in adhesive testing and quality control, this standard does not provide design specifications or allowable stress values for structural joints. It primarily serves as an evaluation tool to assess adhesive bond performance.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose: Defines a method for measuring tensile lap-shear strength in bonded rigid-to-rigid assemblies, facilitating consistent and comparable results.
  • Test Specimen: Standard single-lap joint specimens with specified dimensions, including a 12.5 mm overlap, used to ensure reproducibility and accuracy. Specimens can be individually bonded or cut from panels.
  • Surface Preparation: Emphasizes proper adherend surface treatment according to EN 13887 or manufacturer instructions to optimize bonding effectiveness.
  • Testing Apparatus: Requires a tensile testing machine capable of precise load application and measurement, with self-aligning grips to minimize stress concentration and ensure load alignment.
  • Test Procedure: Application of tensile force parallel to the bond line at a constant crosshead speed or constant rate of loading until failure occurs, typically within 45–85 seconds.
  • Result Expression: Tensile lap-shear strength calculated as breaking force divided by the shear area of the bond, reported as an average from multiple valid specimens.
  • Failure Mode Identification: Classification of failure types according to ISO 10365 to better understand bond behavior.
  • Reporting Requirements: Comprehensive test report including adhesive and adherend details, bonding process, specimen construction, test conditions, results with statistical treatment, and any deviations.

Applications

ISO 4587:2003 is essential for industries and applications where adhesive bonding of rigid materials occurs and where bond strength verification is critical. Practical uses include:

  • Quality Control of adhesive joints in manufacturing processes to ensure consistent bond strength.
  • Adhesive Development and Evaluation for comparing new adhesive formulations or surface treatments.
  • Research and Development to study adhesive performance characteristics under controlled shear stress conditions.
  • Material Selection to assess adhesives suitable for bonding metals, plastics, and composite materials.
  • Failure Analysis to identify bond weaknesses and optimize bonding techniques.
  • Standardized Testing to comply with industry requirements and facilitate global harmonization of adhesive performance criteria.

Related Standards

To fully implement and support testing in accordance with ISO 4587:2003, several related standards should be considered:

  • ISO 291:1997 – Plastics: Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing, ensuring consistent environmental conditions.
  • ISO 527-1:1993 – Plastics: Determination of tensile properties - general principles, relevant to test speed and tensile machine requirements.
  • ISO 10365:1992 – Adhesives: Designation of main failure patterns, essential for classifying adhesive joint failures.
  • EN 13887 – Structural adhesives: Guidelines for surface preparation of metals and plastics, critical for preparing specimens in accordance with best practices.

Combining ISO 4587:2003 with these complementary standards provides a robust framework for evaluating adhesive bond strength in rigid assemblies under controlled and reproducible conditions.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 4587 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 11, Products.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 4587:1995), which has been technically
revised.

for development, evaluation and comparative studies involving adhesives and bonded products, including manufacturing
quality control.
