Overview

ISO 217:2013 is an international standard that specifies the designation, untrimmed sizes, tolerances, and machine direction for paper sheets. It defines two main series of untrimmed paper sheet sizes-primary (R) and supplementary (SR)-which are intended to be trimmed to standard finished sizes according to ISO 216. This standard also establishes the method for indicating the machine direction of the untrimmed sheets, a critical factor in paper manufacturing and processing. By standardizing these dimensions and attributes, ISO 217:2013 ensures compatibility and quality consistency across the paper industry worldwide.

Key Topics

  • Untrimmed Paper Sizes: ISO 217 defines permissible formats for raw paper sheets larger than the final trimmed size. These raw sizes allow manufacturers and converters to optimize cutting and handling processes.
  • Primary and Supplementary Series: The standard outlines two ranges of untrimmed sizes. The primary series (R) caters to sheets requiring minimal trimming, while the supplementary series (SR) provides larger dimensions for operations requiring more cutting.
  • Machine Direction Indication: A key component of ISO 217 is specifying the machine direction (grain direction) of untrimmed sheets. This is essential for understanding paper behavior during printing, folding, and converting.
  • Size Designation: Formats are designated with dimensions given in millimeters, followed by grain orientation indicators-‘LG’ for long grain (machine direction parallel to the longer side) or ‘SG’ for short grain (machine direction parallel to the shorter side).
  • Tolerance Specifications: The standard sets dimensional tolerances to ensure sheets are within acceptable limits. These include ±0.5% of the dimension, rounded to the nearest millimeter, with defined upper and lower limits to accommodate manufacturing realities.
  • Measurement Conditions: Dimensional measurements must be performed under standardized atmospheric conditions as per ISO 187 to ensure consistency and accuracy.

Applications

  • Paper Manufacturing: ISO 217 assists paper producers in delivering untrimmed sheets with consistent dimensions and clear grain direction markings, facilitating downstream processing.
  • Printing and Publishing: Printers rely on machine direction information to optimize paper handling, reduce jams, and improve folding and creasing quality.
  • Paper Converting and Cutting: The standardized untrimmed sizes allow converters to plan precise cutting layouts, minimizing waste while achieving the final formats outlined in ISO 216.
  • Quality Control: Paper mills and buyers use ISO 217 tolerances to agree on acceptable sheet sizes and ensure product quality before trimming and finishing.
  • Supply Chain Standardization: Enables harmonized communication between manufacturers, suppliers, and clients regarding sheet sizes and grain orientation, reducing misunderstandings and errors.

Related Standards

  • ISO 216: Specifies the standard finished sizes of paper sheets (Series A and B) to which the untrimmed sizes in ISO 217 are trimmed.
  • ISO 187: Defines standard atmospheric conditions for the conditioning and testing of paper, which is critical for consistent measurement of sheet dimensions.
  • ISO/TC 6: The technical committee responsible for standards relating to paper and board, under which ISO 217 was developed.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies
casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 217 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 6, Paper, board and pulps.
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 217:2008), of which it constitutes a minor
revision with the following changes:
in Clause 1, deletion of the references to ISO-A series and retention of references to ISO 216.
