Overview
ISO 1222:2010 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines the screw connections used between cameras and tripods or other photographic accessories. This standard is essential for manufacturers and users of photographic equipment, ensuring compatibility and secure attachment between devices. By standardizing tripod connections, ISO 1222:2010 facilitates interchangeability, durability, and safety in photography setups globally.
Key Topics
Scope
Specifies the screw connection dimensions, forms, and tolerances between cameras and tripods or accessories, providing a universal standard.Thread Specifications
Defines the form and basic dimensions of screw threads, based on ISO general-purpose screw threads (ISO 68-2:1998). Includes 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch screw sizes, which are standard in the industry.Nut and Bolt Dimensions
Precise measurements for nut and bolt major diameters, pitch diameters, and tolerances are detailed to maintain consistency and ensure secure fastening.Stabilizing Lock Options
Describes optional stabilizing lock configurations (Types A, B, and C) with pin mechanisms to enhance stability between camera and tripod, including detailed dimensional requirements.Bearing Face Requirements
Specifies criteria for the bearing faces where the nut and bolt make contact, requiring smooth, protrusion-free surfaces for optimal fit. Limits recess size to maintain secure connection.Tolerance and Deviations
Provides acceptable deviations and manufacturing tolerances to ensure parts remain compatible without compromising safety and performance.
Applications
Camera Mounting
Facilitates secure and standardized camera attachment on tripods, monopods, and other supports, enhancing stability during photography.Accessory Compatibility
Enables universal compatibility for photographic accessories like quick-release plates, leveling bases, and panoramic heads across brands.Manufacturing Consistency
Ensures camera and tripod manufacturers adhere to precise mechanical specifications, reducing manufacturing errors and compatibility issues.Professional Photography
Critical for professionals requiring reliable, repeatable connections to minimize vibrations and movement that impact image quality.Consumer Electronics
Used in consumer-grade cameras and accessories, allowing hobbyists easy access to durable tripod mounting options.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

ISO 1222 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 42, Photography.
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 1222:2003), of which it constitutes a minor
revision. It also incorporates the Technical Corrigendum ISO 1222:2003/Cor.1:2003.
