Overview

ISO/FDIS 16959:2025 establishes a standardized laboratory method to determine zinc oxide viscosity (ZOV) of natural rubber latex concentrate. The method is also applicable to compounded latices and is intended for routine quality control, formulation assessment and interlaboratory comparison. The test measures the change in latex viscosity after addition of zinc oxide in the presence of stabilizing and gelling agents under defined test conditions.

Key Topics

  • Principle: A prepared test portion of latex is treated with potassium oleate and ammonium sulphate, then dosed with a zinc oxide dispersion. Viscosity is measured at prescribed intervals after zinc oxide addition.
  • Reagents: Analytical-grade reagents are used, including a 20% potassium oleate solution, ~10% ammonium sulphate solution, 99% zinc oxide powder (dried to constant mass) and a 40% zinc oxide dispersion prepared with acacia and KOH.
  • Apparatus and conditions: A Brookfield viscometer (per ISO 1652) and a water bath maintained at 23 °C ± 2 °C (or 27 °C ± 2 °C for tropical climates) are specified. A pH meter and magnetic stirrer are required.
  • Sampling and sample prep: Sampling follows ISO 123. Total solids (TSC) are determined in accordance with ISO 124. The method uses two parts (A and B) mixed to specified proportions, with part A containing latex adjusted to a target solids level and potassium oleate, and part B containing ammonium sulphate and zinc oxide dispersion.
  • Timing and measurement: Viscosity is recorded at 3 min, 5 min and 10 min after zinc oxide addition. The value at 5 min (ZOV at 5 min) is generally reported, expressed in mPa·s. Duplicate determinations are performed and the mean is reported; duplicates must agree within 10% of their mean or the test is repeated.

Applications

  • Quality control: Monitor batch-to-batch consistency of latex concentrates and detect formulation or processing deviations.
  • Formulation development: Assess the impact of zinc oxide and stabilizers on latex rheology during compounding.
  • Lab standardization: Provides repeatable test conditions for interlaboratory studies and supplier specifications.

Related Standards

  • ISO 123 - Rubber latex - Sampling
  • ISO 124 - Latex, rubber - Determination of total solids content
  • ISO 976 - Determination of pH for rubber latices
  • ISO 1652 - Apparent viscosity by the Brookfield method
  • ISO 19983 and ISO 1382 (precision and terminology references)

Practical value: By following ISO/FDIS 16959, laboratories can produce consistent ZOV data to support material acceptance, control of zinc oxide dosing, and reliable comparison of latex products across suppliers and production runs.
