This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 685:1975), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— “liquid soaps” has been added in the Scope;
— the sentence “This method for the determination of total alkali is not applicable to coloured soaps if
the colour interferes with the methyl orange end-point.” has been deleted from the Scope;
— in 8.3.1, “until there is an excess of about 5 ml” has been changed to “until there is an excess of
about 10 ml”;
— in 8.3.1, “Repeat the shaking until the aqueous layer has become clear” has been changed to “Repeat
the shaking until the water phase is clearly separated from the organic phase (if the two-phase layer
is not obvious, the emulsification can be broken by adding ethanol that does not exceed the volume
of the water phase)”;
— in 8.3.2, the sentence “If the soap colour interferes with the methyl orange end-point, a pH meter can
be used to indicate the end point (pH value 3,1 to 4.4, maintain 10 s) during titration.” has been added.

— en 8.3.1, «jusqu’à l’obtention d’un excès de 5 ml environ» a été remplacé par «jusqu’à l’obtention d’un
excès de 10 ml environ»;
— en 8.3.1, «Continuer à agiter jusqu’à ce que la couche aqueuse devienne claire» a été remplacé par
«Reprendre l’agitation jusqu’à ce que la phase aqueuse soit nettement séparée de la phase organique
(si la séparation entre les deux phases n’est pas complète (claire limpide), l’émulsion peut être
rompue en ajoutant de l’éthanol dans des proportions qui ne dépassent pas le volume de la phase
aqueuse)»;
— en 8.3.2, la phrase «Si la couleur du savon gêne l’appréciation du virage du méthylorange, un pH-

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 685:1975), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— Added liquid soaps in scope;
— Deleted “This method for the determination of total alkali is not applicable to coloured soaps if the
colour interferes with the methyl orange end-point.” in scope;
— In 8.2 determination, “until there is an excess of about 5 ml” was changed to “until there is an excess
of about 10 ml” ;
— In 8.2 determination, “Repeat the shaking until the aqueous layer has become clear” was changed
to “Repeated shaking until the water phase is clearly separated from the organic phase (If the two-
phase layer is not obvious, the emulsification can be broken by adding ethanol that does not exceed
the volume of the water phase)” ;
— In 8.2.1 Determination of total alkali content, added the sentence “If the soap colour interferes with
the methyl orange end-point, the pH meter can be used to indicate the end point (pH value 3.1~4.4,
maintain 10s) during titration”.
