BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 701, International gear notation - Symbols for geometrical data,
was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 60, Gears, the Secretariat of which is held by the
Institut Belge de Normalisation (IBN).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1950 and led, in 1962, to the
adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In December 1965, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 889) was circulated to ail the IS0
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature,by
the following Member Bodies :

INTRODUCTION
This IS0 Recommendation aims to unify the symbols used in different countries for the international
notation of gears with regard to the principal geometrical data defined in IS0 Recommendation
R ., (1) International vocabulmy of gears - Part I : Geomeîrical definitions.
These symbols have been chosen after detailed comparative study, taking into account the necessity
of retaining a certain number of letters for standardization of other notations at a later date, such as
those dealing with gear accuracy.
Consequently it is important
to bring national standards into line with this IS0 Recommendation, so that in future a

real intemational language of notations wiü facilitate the exchange of documents between
one country and another;
to use for geometrical data only combinations of letters or signs appearing in the alpha-

betical Annex, in order to avoid any risk of confusion with notations to be determined
later with regard to other gear data.
This IS0 Recommendation consists essentially of two parts :

on the one hand, the principal symbols, composed either of a single basic letter, or of a
basic letter and suffix or sign which are generally inseparable for the given term (see
Table 1);

on the other hand, additional suffaes or signs which may be added if necessary to the
principal symbols, in order to imply a particular qualification of the given term (see
Table 2).
The Annex gives lists classified in alphabetical order according to the Roman and Greek alphabets, on
the one hand of the basic letter symbols, and on the other hand of the suffxes and signs which have
been used in the establishment of this IS0 Recommendation and a combination of which may possibly
be used for the notation of any other term of geometrical data not explicitly mentioned in this
IS0 Recommendation.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 701, Notation internationale des engrenages - Symboles de
a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 60, Engrenages, dont le
données géométriques,
Secrétariat est assuré par l'Institut Belge de Normalisation (IBN).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en 1950 et abou-
tirent, en 1962, à l'adoption d'un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En décembre 1965, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (No 889) fut soumis à l'enquête de tous
les Comités Membres de I'ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d'ordre rédac-
tionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

INTRODUCTION
La présente Recommandation IS0 a pour objet d'unifier les symboles utilisés dans les différents pays
pour la notation internationale des engrenages, en ce qui concerne les principales données géomé-
triques définies dans la Recommandation ISO/R .' 1, Vocabulaire international des engrenages - Pre-
mière partie : Définitions géométriques.
Ces symboles ont été choisis à la suite d'une étude comparative approfondie, tenant compte de la
nécessité de réserver un certain nombre de lettres pour la normalisation ultérieure d'autres notations,
telles que celles qui sont relatives à la précision des engrenages.
I1 importe par conséquent
de mettre les normes nationales en accord avec la présente Recommandation IS0 afin

d'assurer pour l'avenir un véritable langage international de notations facilitant les échan-
ges de documents d'un pays à l'autre;
de n'utiliser, pour les données géométriques, que les combinaisons des lettres ou signes

faisant l'objet du répertoire en Annexe, de façon à éviter tout risque de confusion avec
les notations à prévoir ultérieurement pour d'autres données relatives aux engrenages.
La présente Recommandation IS0 comporte essentiellement dew parties, à savoir :

d'une part, les symboles principaux, composés soit d'une seule lettre de base, soit d'une
lettre de base et d'un indice ou signe généralement inséparables paur le terme en question
(voir Tableau 1);

d'autre part, des indices ou signes additionnels à ajouter, s'il y a lieu, aux symboles prin-
cipaux, pour exprimer telle ou telle qualification du terme en question (voir Tableau 2).
L'Annexe récapitule, classés dans l'ordre des alphabets romain et grec, d'une part les lettres de base et
d'autre part les indices et signes ayant servi à l'établissement de la présente Recommandation IS0 et
dont la combinaison peut être éventuellement utilisée pour la notation de tout autre terme de donnée
géométrique non explicitement mentionné dans cette Recommandation ISO.
