Overview

ISO/TR 7470:2023 - "Gas cylinders - List of provisions" is a Technical Report from ISO/TC 58 (Gas cylinders) that inventories gas cylinder valve outlets in use worldwide. The third edition (2023) consolidates valve outlet information by gas, country and thread type and provides nominal dimensions, designations, references and pressure ratings (given in bar) via downloadable tables. ISO/TR 7470 is a reference listing; complete, prescriptive descriptions of individual valve outlets remain in national standards.

Keywords: ISO/TR 7470, gas cylinders, valve outlets, valve threads, cylinder fittings, thread sizes, nominal dimensions.

Key topics

  • Catalogue of valve outlets: Indexed by gas (with UN numbers), showing which valve outlets are used for each gas.
  • Valve outlets by country and by thread: Tables/listings identify national practices and thread types.
  • Thread types and sizes: Nominal dimensions and thread designations are presented (detailed descriptions are in national standards).
  • Pressure information: Pressure ratings are included in bar; note that for compressed gases the pressure usually corresponds to working pressure and for liquefied gases to test pressure.
  • Data access: Tables are provided in a spreadsheet available from ISO’s website (https://standards.iso.org/iso/tr/7470/ed-1/en).
  • Document status: Technical Report (informative), no normative references or listed terms/definitions in this document.

Applications

ISO/TR 7470 is a practical reference for ensuring correct selection and compatibility of cylinder valve outlets across jurisdictions:

  • Selecting appropriate valve outlets during gas cylinder design and manufacturing.
  • Specifying valve threads and outlet types for procurement and supply chain compatibility.
  • Supporting transportation, storage and handling decisions where valve outlet compatibility affects safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Assisting maintenance and cylinder-fitting operations to match valves, regulators and adapters.
  • Facilitating international trade and harmonization by showing national variants of valve outlets.

Keywords: valve outlet compatibility, cylinder valve threads, gas cylinder regulation, gas supply safety.

Who uses this standard

  • Cylinder and valve manufacturers
  • Gas suppliers and distributors
  • Safety and engineering teams in laboratories, hospitals, and industrial plants
  • Transport and logistics companies handling compressed and liquefied gases
  • Standards committees and regulators comparing national valve provisions

Related standards

  • National valve outlet standards (complete technical descriptions and requirements)
  • ISO/TC 58 publications (cylinder fittings and gas cylinder standards) Note: ISO/TR 7470 is an informative inventory. Users should consult the referenced national standards for prescriptive requirements and detailed thread specifications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

Table 1 lists the gas and the corresponding tabs in the spreadsheet available at: https:// standards .iso
.org/ iso/ tr/ 7470/ ed -1/ en, where the nominal dimensions, designations and references of valve outlets
found in national standards are presented by country and by thread type. All of the pressures are given
in bar. In case of doubt, refer to the applicable valve outlet standard.
NOTE The pressure ratings are taken from the standards. The pressure rating for compressed gas normally
corresponds to the working pressure of the gas cylinder and for liquefied gases to the test pressure of the gas
