Overview

ISO 8549-4:2026: Prosthetics and orthotics - Vocabulary - Part 4: Terms relating to limb amputation is an international standard developed by ISO Technical Committee 168 (Prosthetics and orthotics). This standard defines the terminology used for surgical limb amputations, providing clear and consistent vocabulary to describe amputation levels and procedures. The document focuses exclusively on surgical limb amputations and does not include terms for traumatic limb loss or congenital limb deficiency.

Accurate communication and documentation are critical in prosthetics and orthotics. ISO 8549-4:2026 supports practitioners, researchers, manufacturers, and organizations around the world, enhancing clarity across clinical care, research, and product development related to surgical limb amputation.

Key Topics

ISO 8549-4:2026 covers a range of essential terms and classifications associated with surgical limb amputations:

  • General Limb Amputation Terminology

    • Definitions related to upper limb, lower limb, residual limb (stump), and levels of amputation.
    • Classifications for unilateral, bilateral, triple, and quadruple amputations.
  • Upper Limb Amputation Levels

    • Terms such as partial hand amputation, wrist disarticulation, transradial amputation, elbow disarticulation, transhumeral amputation, shoulder disarticulation, and scapulothoracic disarticulation.
  • Lower Limb Amputation Levels

    • Classifications including partial foot amputation, ankle disarticulation, transtibial amputation, knee disarticulation, transfemoral amputation, hip disarticulation, and transpelvic amputation.
  • Amputation Procedures

    • Definitions of initial (primary) amputations, revision amputations, two-stage amputations, and reamputation.
    • Guidelines for accurate descriptions, including specifics such as limb and level.

ISO 8549-4:2026 reflects current best practices by avoiding outdated anatomical nomenclature, opting for modern, harmonized terms.

Applications

Standardized limb amputation terminology has significant practical value for multiple stakeholders:

  • Clinicians and Healthcare Providers

    • Promotes precise communication among interdisciplinary rehabilitation teams.
    • Supports accurate clinical documentation and patient records.
    • Facilitates comparison of clinical outcomes and best practices internationally.
  • Researchers and Epidemiologists

    • Enables data consistency for studies, registries, and systematic reviews.
    • Supports international comparisons in prosthetics and orthotics research.
    • Contributes to advances in limb amputation management and outcomes.
  • Manufacturers of Prosthetic and Orthotic Devices

    • Guides product development with harmonized references to amputation levels and procedures.
    • Supports clear labeling and user documentation.
  • Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations

    • Supports the development of policies and programs related to rehabilitation and limb loss.
  • Persons Who Have Had an Amputation

    • Improves understanding through patient education using internationally recognized terminology.

Related Standards

ISO 8549-4:2026 is part of the ISO 8549 series (Prosthetics and orthotics - Vocabulary), which provides essential terminology for the prosthetics and orthotics sector. Other relevant standards include:

  • ISO 8549-1: General terms for external limb prostheses and orthoses.
  • ISO 8549-2: Terms relating to external limb prostheses.
  • ISO 8549-3: Terms relating to external orthoses.

These international standards collectively promote interoperability, safety, and effective communication across prosthetics and orthotics professionals and organizations worldwide.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)

related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO’s adherence to the World Trade
Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 168, Prosthetics and orthotics.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8549-4:2020), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— the use of hyphens in anatomical terms, such as transpelvic, has been abandoned in line with other parts
of the ISO 8549 series;
— the term “amputee” has been removed from the standard and replaced with “person who have had an
amputation”.
A list of all parts in the ISO 8549 series can be found on the ISO website.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso.org/members.html.
