ISO 12490
(Main)Oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy — Mechanical integrity and sizing of actuators and mounting kits for pipeline valves
- Abstract
ISO 12490:2011 defines the requirements for mechanical integrity and sizing of actuators used on valves manufactured under ISO 14313 and API Specification 6D. ISO 12490:2011 is applicable to all types of electric, pneumatic and hydraulic actuators, inclusive of mounting kit, installed on pipeline valves. ISO 12490:2011 is not applicable to actuators installed on control valves, valves being used for regulation, valves in sub-sea service, handheld powered devices, stand-alone manually operated gearboxes, instrument tubing and associated fittings and actuator control equipment.

ISO 12490 is an ISO standard for the mechanical integrity and sizing of actuators and mounting kits used on pipeline valves. It applies to electric, pneumatic and hydraulic actuators on valves made to ISO 14313 and API Specification 6D, and it supplements API 6DX, 3rd edition (2025). In practice, it tells manufacturers and suppliers what to design, mark, test and declare for these actuator assemblies.
What does ISO 12490 specify?
ISO 12490 specifies requirements for actuator design, mechanical integrity and sizing for pipeline valves in the oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy. It is written for actuators and related mounting kits used on valves that conform to ISO 14313 and API Specification 6D.
The document is organized into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, and Supplements to API 6DX, plus a bibliography. Annex A is normative and covers actuator sizing.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| A | Sizing of actuators |
The scope also sets clear exclusions. ISO 12490 does not apply to actuators on control valves, valves used for regulation, valves in subsea service, handheld powered devices, stand-alone manually operated gearboxes, instrument tubing and associated fittings, or actuator control equipment. That boundary matters because it tells a buyer or engineer when this standard is the right one for a pipeline valve package.
What are the key requirements of ISO 12490?
ISO 12490 builds on API 6DX, 3rd edition (2025), and then adds ISO-specific requirements. For users, that means the base actuator rules come from API 6DX, while ISO 12490 adds the extra points that make the actuator compliant to this ISO document.
- The requirements of API 6DX apply, with additions in ISO 12490. This keeps the document aligned with the current actuator standard while adding only the ISO supplement.
- Annex A is normative for actuator sizing. Sizing is not just guidance; it is part of the required method for matching the actuator to the valve.
- Valve data requirements are placed in Annex A. In practice, users need to gather the valve information needed for sizing and keep it with the design record.
- Actuators may be assembled as a single unit or from modules. The standard now addresses module assembly, which matters when parts come from different suppliers or are integrated later.
- The actuator nameplate shall include “ISO 12490”. The tables also keep the API 6DX or 6DX marking requirement, so both identifiers are needed on the nameplate.
- Marking depends on actuator type. The tables for pneumatic/hydraulic, electric, and electro-hydraulic actuators specify items such as manufacturer identification, model, serial number, pressures or electrical ratings, hazardous area classification where relevant, and year of manufacture. This is the practical acceptance-check list for receiving inspection.
- The manufacturer is responsible for compliance and shall provide a statement of conformity. That makes the manufacturer the accountable party even when suppliers, stockists or integrators are involved.
- The edition adds testing requirements for actuators and functional testing of the valve-actuator assembly. This supports final verification that the actuator and valve work together as intended before delivery.
What terms does ISO 12490 define?
ISO 12490 uses the terms and definitions from API 6DX, 3rd edition (2025). The document therefore relies on the API 6DX vocabulary for the actuator and mounting-kit system.
- Actuator - the device that operates the valve; ISO 12490 covers electric, pneumatic and hydraulic types.
- Mounting kit - the parts used to connect the actuator to the valve.
- Module - a part of an actuator that can be assembled into a complete unit.
- Manufacturer - the organization responsible for compliance and the statement of conformity.
- Secondary gearbox - an additional gearbox named in the updated definitions.
- Electro-hydraulic actuator - an actuator type with both electrical and hydraulic elements, with its own marking requirements.
- Nameplate - the identification plate where the required markings are applied.
Who uses ISO 12490?
ISO 12490 is used by actuator manufacturers, valve manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, stockists, value-add centers and integrators working on pipeline valve packages. Quality and inspection teams use it to check marking, sizing evidence, conformity statements and functional test records.
It is relevant in the oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy, especially where pipeline valves need electric, pneumatic or hydraulic actuation. Buyers and engineers use it when specifying actuator packages for pipeline valves and when confirming that the supplied assembly matches the valve and the intended service.
What changed in ISO 12490 from the previous edition?
ISO 12490 is the second edition and it cancels and replaces ISO 12490:2011. The foreword says this edition technically revises the earlier one and brings it up to date by referencing the current API 6DX, 3rd edition (2025), plus supplementary content.
The stated changes are:
- Annex A is normative.
- Valve data requirements have moved to Annex A.
- The document now addresses third-party suppliers of actuators.
- New definitions are provided for manufacturer, module and secondary gearbox.
- New figures are added for different actuator types.
- Figure 1 is revised for clarity and renumbered as Figure 6.
- Requirements are added for assembly of modules by the supplier.
- Requirements are added for testing of actuators by the supplier.
- Requirements are added for functional testing of the valve and actuator assembly.
Which standards are used with ISO 12490?
ISO 12490 is built around API 6DX, 3rd edition (2025), which is the base document it supplements. Its terms and general requirements come from that standard.
- API 6DX, 3rd edition (2025) - the referenced actuator and mounting-kit standard, and the source of the terms and definitions used in ISO 12490.
- ISO 14313 - the pipeline valve standard named in the scope; ISO 12490 applies to actuators used on valves that conform to it.
- API Specification 6D - the other valve specification named in the scope and bibliography for the pipeline valves covered by ISO 12490.
What does the ISO 12490 document contain?
ISO 12490 contains a short set of supplementing clauses, three marking tables, a normative sizing annex and a bibliography. The tables cover pneumatic/hydraulic, electric and electro-hydraulic actuator nameplate marking.
The document also includes figures for different actuator types, with a revised Figure 1 now shown as Figure 6. For implementers, those figures and tables support design review, procurement checks, marking verification and final testing of the actuator-valve assembly.
