It focuses on the conformance testing for coding audio-visual objects, specifically addressing the ExtendedCore2D conformance amendments. This document is part of the MPEG-4 suite of standards, which facilitate the encoding and decoding of multimedia content for various applications.
The amendment enhances the conformance testing framework, ensuring that audio-visual coding implementations comply with the ExtendedCore2D profile requirements. This updated conformance testing standard is key to guaranteeing interoperability and quality across multimedia systems and devices.
Key Topics
Conformance Testing for Audio-Visual Coding
The amendment emphasizes verifying whether implementations meet the ExtendedCore2D conformance criteria, which is essential for ensuring compatibility and performance across varied platforms.ExtendedCore2D Profile Compliance
Defines detailed test specifications and methodologies for the ExtendedCore2D profile, which extends MPEG-4 audiovisual coding capabilities with added dimensional and functional features.Standardized Testing Procedures
Provides a framework to systematically evaluate implementations against the ISO/IEC 14496-4 standard, facilitating certification and quality assurance.Document Format and Usage
The amendment is distributed as a PDF document accessible via Adobe Acrobat Reader, highlighting the importance of proper installation and file management for evaluation.
Applications
Multimedia Device Manufacturers
Enables manufacturers of audio-visual hardware and software to ensure their products conform to the ExtendedCore2D profile, guaranteeing interoperability with other MPEG-4 implementations.Software Developers
Provides developers with the necessary guidelines to test encoding and decoding functionalities, helping maintain compliance during software updates and new releases.Broadcasting and Streaming Services
Helps services ensure consistent playback quality and user experience through devices that conform to the ExtendedCore2D profile in MPEG-4 coding.Quality Assurance and Certification
Utilized by testing laboratories and quality assurance teams to verify implementation adherence to international standards, supporting global acceptance and certification processes.
Related Standards
ISO/IEC 14496-1 (Systems)
Defines the overall systems framework related to MPEG-4, complementing the conformance aspects covered in Part 4.ISO/IEC 14496-3 (Audio)
Addresses audio coding standards within the MPEG-4 suite, working alongside video and conformance testing specifications.Other MPEG-4 Parts (e.g., Part 2 Video Coding)
Related standards that specify coding technologies whose conformance might be validated using Part 4 guidelines.
Practical Value
By implementing ISO/IEC 14496-4:2004/Amd 40:2011, organizations and developers can:
- Ensure interoperability by conforming to widely recognized audio-visual coding standards.
- Enhance product reliability through rigorous functional testing aligned with ExtendedCore2D profile requirements.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
