Overview
ISO/IEC 23008-4:2020 - MMT reference software - specifies the reference and conformance software for MPEG Media Transport (MMT). The standard provides a software implementation and descriptive documentation that can be used to validate and clarify the normative clauses of other parts of ISO/IEC 23008. It supplies test vectors comprising an MMTP sender and MMTP receiver, together with software modules, configuration formats, and guidance for building and running the reference implementation.
Key Topics
- Software architecture: sender/receiver operation, class diagrams, and module interactions for packetization, de-packetization and reconstruction.
- MMTP packet handling: packet types for MPU (Media Processing Unit), GFD (Generic File Data), and signaling; packet main header and payload metadata structures.
- Reconstruction modules: processes to reconstruct MPUs, generic files, and signaling XML from received MMTP packets.
- Configuration file format: canonical parameters (e.g., VERSION, DEMON for sender/receiver mode, DIR_SENDER_MPU_AUDIO, DIR_RECEIVER_MPU, DIR_PKT, MTU) and an example configuration that controls sender/receiver behavior and file locations.
- Conformance and test vectors: reference test vectors to demonstrate conformity or non-conformity with ISO/IEC 23008 normative clauses.
- Version control and compiling: recommended development environment details (C/C++, Ubuntu/Linux, GCC 4.8.1, Eclipse C++ IDE) and dependencies (TinyXML for packet viewing, pthread).
- Purpose of the reference software: validation of written specifications and clarification of normative behavior for implementers.
Applications
- Implementers and developers of streaming systems use ISO/IEC 23008-4 reference software to build and verify MMT-compliant MMTP senders and receivers.
- Interoperability and conformance testing: test labs and QA teams run supplied test vectors to validate device or server behavior against MMT transport rules.
- Research and prototyping: academics and engineers prototype new delivery mechanisms or integrate MMT into heterogeneous environments (broadcast, OTT, IP networks).
- Product vendors (encoders, packagers, players) ensure correct packetization, metadata handling, and reconstruction of MPUs and signaling.
Related Standards
- ISO/IEC 23008-1 - MPEG Media Transport (MMT) core specification
- ISO/IEC 23008-2 - High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) (codec related)
- ISO/IEC 23008-7 - Conformance for MMT
- ISO/IEC 23008-10 / -11 / -13 - FEC codes, Composition Information, and Implementation Guidelines referenced by this part
This standard is essential reading for anyone implementing, testing, or integrating MMT/MMTP-based media delivery solutions and provides the concrete reference software and configuration examples needed to ensure correct, interoperable deployments.

The reference and conformance software operates according to Figure 1. It takes as input the MPUs,
generic files and signalling messages that are to be transmitted. The MMTP sender then generates the
MMTP flow as a multiplex of MMTP packets from the different sources and uses BSD sockets to send
them to a pre-configured destination IP address and port number using MMTP over UDP. The MMTP
receiver de-multiplexes the MMTP flow based on the packet_id and the mode and passes the packets
to the corresponding reconstruction module. The reconstruction module extracts the payload and
reconstructs the resource (i.e. the MPU, the generic file, or the signalling message).
