Overview
ISO 14125:1998/Amd 1:2011 is an international standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) focusing on fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites. This amendment updates the original 1998 standard on the determination of flexural properties of fibre-reinforced plastic composites. Fibre-reinforced composites are widely used in various industries due to their superior mechanical properties, and accurate evaluation of their flexural characteristics is essential for quality control and material development.
This amendment refines key measurement methods and definitions to improve test accuracy and applicability, especially for composites with low deformation behavior, such as high-modulus carbon fibre-reinforced plastics.
Key Topics
Flexural Property Measurement
The document outlines precise procedures for determining the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and related characteristics of fibre-reinforced plastic composites. This includes updates to deformation ranges used in calculations based on the composite's behavior under load.Material Deformation Ranges
Specific provisions were added for materials exhibiting very low flexural deformation (below 0.0025 strain), such as high-modulus carbon fibre composites. For these, the strain difference used to calculate flexural modulus is reduced to between 0.0005 and 0.0010 to ensure accurate measurement.Updated Test Parameters
The amendment modifies deformation parameters and calculation equations (e.g., defining the deflections s′ and s″ for specific strain values) to enhance consistency and repeatability across test laboratories.Normative References
Amendment 1 updates the normative references essential for applying the standard, including related ISO standards for plastic testing methods (ISO 178, ISO 291, ISO 293, and others) and test specimen preparation.Statistical Interpretation of Results
Guidance on statistical analysis for test results, such as confidence intervals and data interpretation, is aligned with ISO 2602 to ensure reliability and comparability of data.
Applications
Material Quality Control
Manufacturers of fibre-reinforced plastic composites use ISO 14125:1998/Amd 1:2011 to evaluate flexural properties critical to certifying material performance and ensuring consistency batch-to-batch.Research and Development
Engineering teams rely on this standard to develop new FRP materials with tailored mechanical properties by assessing flexural strength and stiffness under controlled conditions.Product Certification
Compliance with ISO 14125 facilitates product certification processes, providing clients and regulatory bodies with verified mechanical property data.Structural Component Design
Designers use standardized flexural property data to perform accurate finite element analyses and to optimize composite structures for aerospace, automotive, marine, and civil engineering applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Avant-propos
votants.
