Liquid crystal display devices - Part 10-2: Environmental, endurance and mechanical test methods - Environmental and endurance

IEC 61747-10-2:2014(E) lists test methods applicable to liquid crystal display devices. It takes into account, wherever possible, the environmental test methods outlined in IEC 60068. The object of this standard is to establish uniform preferred test methods with preferred values for stress levels for judging the environmental properties of liquid crystal display devices. This first edition of IEC 61747-10-2 cancels and replaces Clauses 1 and 3 of the first edition of IEC 61747-5 published in 1998. This edition constitutes a technical revision with the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
a) Examples of the test conditions have been added to each test method;
b) References cited have been updated.

Overview

IEC 61747-10-2:2014 defines environmental and endurance test methods for liquid crystal display (LCD) devices (cells and modules). It establishes uniform preferred test procedures and stress levels to judge environmental performance, aligning where possible with the IEC 60068 environmental testing series. This edition (2014) adds example test conditions and updates references, and replaces parts of the previous IEC 61747-5 edition.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and purpose
    • Standardizes environmental test methods for LCDs to evaluate durability and reliability under defined stress conditions.
    • In case of conflict, a specific relevant specification takes precedence.
  • Standard test atmosphere
    • Default measurement conditions: 15 °C to 35 °C, 25 % to 85 % RH (as applicable), air pressure 86–106 kPa, and absolute humidity limits.
  • Temperature tests
    • Rapid change (thermal shock) - two‑chamber method (Na): selectable low/high temperatures from defined tables (e.g., −50 °C to +100 °C entries), exposure durations (10 min–3 h), transition times (examples: 2–3 min, 20–30 s, <10 s), and cycle counts (e.g., 5–200).
    • Specified change rate (temperature cycling) - one‑chamber method (Nb): controlled ramp rates (e.g., 1, 3, 5 °C/min ± tolerances) between chosen temp limits.
  • Storage and pressure
    • Storage at high/low temperatures, and low air pressure tests to address altitude/packaging concerns.
  • Humidity and composite tests
    • Damp heat (steady-state and cyclic) and composite temperature/humidity cyclic tests to assess moisture tolerance and condensation effects.
  • Radiation and electrical stresses
    • Light exposure tests (simulated solar and indoor daylight) and ESD tests are included to examine photochemical and electrostatic endurance.
  • Measurements
    • Defined initial and final inspections: external visual checks and mechanical, electrical and optical tests as prescribed in the relevant specification.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it
    • LCD and display module manufacturers, component suppliers, reliability/test laboratories, OEMs, procurement and quality assurance teams, and certification bodies.
  • Practical value
    • Helps write product specifications, design for robustness, compare suppliers, plan validation test sequences, and support warranty and field‑failure analysis.
    • Useful for establishing repeatable LCD endurance testing, thermal shock, humidity resistance and light-aging evaluation.

Related standards

  • IEC 60068 (Environmental testing series)
  • Other parts of IEC 61747 (LCD devices series)
  • IEC 60747 / IEC 60748-1 (semiconductor and IC test references)
  • ISO 18909 (image stability - referenced)

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
