Overview

IEC 62715-6-42:2026 is an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard that specifies the mechanical test methods for measuring the flattening force of rollable display devices. This document is a crucial part of the IEC 62715 series focused on flexible displays. It defines standardized measurement conditions and methodologies for evaluating the force required to flatten rollable display panels and modules, which are commonly rolled along a single axis or a double axis.

As the adoption of rollable and flexible display technologies expands, accurate and standardized flattening force measurements are vital for device durability, user experience, and overall product quality. This standard ensures consistency across the industry, supporting both development and quality assurance for manufacturers and suppliers.

Key Topics

IEC 62715-6-42:2026 covers several essential aspects relevant to mechanical testing of flexible, rollable displays:

  • Flattening Force Definition: Establishes the force required to unfurl a rollable display into a flat state.
  • Device Types: Addresses measurement methods for both Type A and Type B rollable display device designs, applicable to one-axis and double-axis configurations.
  • Measurement Procedures: Details step-by-step processes and required equipment for conducting flattening force tests, including the use of tension sensors and height measurement systems.
  • Environmental Conditions: Specifies standard atmospheric conditions (temperature, humidity, pressure) for consistent and reliable testing.
  • Arching Height Measurement: Describes methods for measuring the arching height of display surfaces under tension using laser scanning technology.
  • Analysis and Reporting: Outlines required data recording, such as flattening force applied, number of reel turns, arching height, and equipment configuration.

Applications

IEC 62715-6-42:2026 has direct applications in several areas of the flexible display industry, including:

  • Research & Development: Supports the creation and refinement of new rollable display technologies by providing objective, consistent measurement results.
  • Product Testing & Quality Control: Helps manufacturers and suppliers verify that rollable displays meet required flattening force specifications, ensuring reliable operation over product life cycles.
  • Device Reliability Assessment: Enables assessment of long-term mechanical reliability and resilience to repeated rolling and flattening cycles.
  • User Experience Optimization: Guides optimization of device design to balance the user experience (minimal arching, easy flattening) with display durability and product safety.
  • Supplier Agreements: Facilitates clear specification and acceptance criteria between component suppliers and device manufacturers.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to testing and evaluating flexible display devices, consider the following related standards:

  • IEC 62715-6-1:2018 – Flexible display devices - Part 6-1: Mechanical test methods - Deformation tests. This standard should be used as a foundation for environmental and general mechanical testing of flexible displays.
  • IEC 62715 Series: Other parts of this series provide additional mechanical, electrical, and optical test methods specific to the unique requirements of flexible and rollable displays.

IEC 62715-6-42:2026 complements these standards by providing specialized guidance on flattening force testing, allowing stakeholders across the flexible display value chain to ensure product performance and durability through standardized evaluation methods.

4 Standard atmospheric conditions
The standard atmospheric conditions in IEC 62715-6-1:2018, Clause 4, shall apply as follows,
unless otherwise specifically agreed between customer and supplier.
– temperature: 25 °C ± 3 °C,
– relative humidity: 25 % RH to 85 % RH,
– atmospheric pressure: 86 kPa to 106 kPa.
When different environmental conditions are used, they shall be reported in detail in the
specification.
5 Measurement methods
5.1 General
The measurement methods are designed to determine the minimum force required to apply
pressure to the cross-sectional area at the end of the display when the display is flattened from
the crimped state. A rollable display device has a multi-layer film structure. As such, the material,
modulus, and rigidity of each layer of film affect the minimum force required to flatten the rollable
display. In addition, the radius of the reel is another factor that affects the flattening force. During
the use of a rollable display, it is necessary to apply tension to the flexible display device to reduce
the warpage of the surface. Therefore, this method is used to determine the minimum flattening
force that shall be applied to the cross-sectional area at the end of the flexible display device when
the device is flattened. This helps to avoid issues such as low reliability caused by excessive force
on the rollable display. According to the different rolled-up modes and the movement mechanisms
of rollable displays, this document includes measurement methods for two types of rollable
display devices. Additionally, rollable display can be broadly classified into one-axis and double-
axis design types.
NOTE 1 This document identifies two types of rollable display devices, labelled type A and type B.
NOTE 2 For a type A rollable display device, as the display device rolls back from the reel, the diameter of the reel
gradually decreases as the display device attached to the reel decreases.
NOTE 3 For a type B rollable display device, as the display device rolls back from the reel, there is no change in the
diameter of the reel since the display device only attached to a part of the reel all the time.
As the influence of the plastic and elastic force of the rollable display device itself, an arch will
appear on surface of the rollable display. In the absence of sufficient lateral tension, the arch on
the flexile display surface will affect the user's experience. However, if excessive lateral tension
is applied, the reliability of the display device for long-term use will also be affected.
Therefore, the measurement methods are used to evaluate the relationship between the arching
height
