A moins qu’il ne conçoive des luminaires pour être utilisés spécifiquement avec des semi-
luminaires, il n’est pas de la responsabilité du fabricant de luminaire de s’assurer que la
conformité à la CEI 60598-1 est perpétuée lorsque l’utilisateur a remplacé les types de
lampes spécifiées par des semi-luminaires. Il appartient au fabricant de semi-luminaires
d’apporter les informations concernant les limites d’utilisation.

INTERPRETATION SHEET
The following interpretation was agreed at the Bled meeting of IEC/SC 34D/WG LUMEX held

in April 1996.
Unless a luminaire has been specifically designed for use with semi-luminaires, the luminaire
manufacturer is not responsible for continued IEC 60598 conformity in the situation where the
user has replaced specified lamp types with semi-luminaires. The semi-luminaire
manufacturer has responsibility to provide information with respect to limitations of use.

toutes les prescriptions concernant le marquage F contenues dans la CEI 60598-1. Elle a été

acceptée lors de la réunion du GT/SC/CEI 34D LUMEX qui s’est tenue à Budapest en Avril

1997.
Paragraphe 2.4
Remplacer 2.4 par ce qui suit:
2.4 Classification en fonction du matériau de la surface de montage pour lequel le
luminaire est prévu
Les luminaires doivent être classés selon qu’ils sont:
– uniquement prévus pour être installés sur une surface de montage non combustible;
– prévus pour être installés directement sur une surface de montage normalement
inflammable;
– prévus pour être installés directement dans/sur une surface de montage normalement
inflammable lorsqu’un matériau isolant thermiquement peut recouvrir le luminaire.
NOTE Il n’est pas souhaitable que des luminaires soient directement installés sur des surfaces en matériau
facilement inflammables. Des prescriptions pour des luminaires classés comme aptes à être installés directement
sur des surfaces en matériau normalement inflammable avec ou sans couverture d’un matériau isolant, ou
uniquement sur des surfaces en matériau non combustible sont données dans l’article 3 pour le marquage, dans
l’article 4 pour la construction et dans l’article 12 pour les essais correspondants. Une annexe normative D donne
la description d’une enceinte à air calme qui doit être utilisée pour les essais et une annexe informative N explique
les principes du marquage F.

The following interpretation sheet has been prepared in order to provide consistency and

clarification to all the F-marking requirements contained in IEC 60598-1: 1996. It was agreed

at the Budapest meeting of IEC/SC 34D/WG LUMEX held in April 1997.

Subclause 2.4
Replace 2.4 by the following:
2.4 Classification according to material of the mounting surface for which the luminaire
is designed
Luminaires shall be classified according to whether they:
– are only suitable for mounting on non-combustible surfaces;
– are suitable for direct mounting on normally flammable surfaces;
– are suitable for direct mounting in/on normally flammable surfaces when thermally
insulating material may cover the luminaire.
NOTE Readily flammable surfaces are not suitable for the direct mounting of luminaires. Requirements for
luminaires classified as suitable for direct mounting on normally flammable surfaces with or without the covering of
insulating material, or for direct mounting on non-combustible surfaces only are given in section 3 for the marking,
in section 4 for the construction, and for the related tests in section 12. Normative Annex D gives descrptions of
the draught-proof enclosures to be used during the testing, and informative Annex N explains the F-marking
principles.

Paragraphe 3.2.9
Remplacer le paragraphe 3.2.9 par le suivant:
3.2.9 Lorsque cela est applicable,
– le symbole correspondant (voir figure 1) pour aptitude au montage direct sur des surfaces
en matériau uniquement non combustible;
NOTE Comme solution alternative il peut être accepté une notice d’avertissement dont la description figure
en 3.3.4.
– le symbole correspondant (voir figure 1) pour aptitude au montage direct sur des surfaces
en matériau normalement inflammable;
– le symbole correspondant (voir figure 1) pour aptitude au montage direct sur/dans des
surfaces en matériau normalement inflammable lorsqu’un matériau isolant thermiquement
peut recouvrir le luminaire.
NOTE Une notice d’avertissement ou un symbole n’est pas requis lorsqu’il est évident qu’un luminaire peut être
installé sur des surfaces en matériau normalement inflammable, luminaires portatifs à usage général, baladeuses,
luminaires attirant pour les enfants et luminaires pour éclairage de secours par ex.
Paragraphe 3.3.4
Remplacer le paragraphe 3.3.4 par le suivant:
3.3.4 Lorsqu’un luminaire est uniquement apte au montage direct sur des surfaces en
matériau non combustible le symbole correspondant (voir figure 1) n’est pas utilisé, une
notice d’avertissement doit alors être attachée au luminaire ou figurer dans les instructions du
fabricant, expliquant que le luminaire ne peut en aucune circonstance être installé sur des
surfaces en matériau normalement inflammable.

Subclause 3.2.9
Replace subclause 3.2.9 by the following:
3.2.9 Where applicable,
– the relevant symbol (see figure 1) for suitability for direct mounting on non-combustible
surfaces only;
NOTE As an alternative, a warning notice may be applied as described by 3.3.4.
– the relevant symbol (see figure 1) for suitability for direct mounting on normally flammable
surfaces;
– the relevant symbol (see figure 1) for suitability for direct mounting in/on normally
flammable surfaces where thermally insulating material may cover the luminaire.
NOTE A warning notice or symbol is not required when it is obvious that a luminaire may be mounted on normally
flammable surfaces, i.e. portable general purpose luminaires, hand lamps, portable child-appealing luminaires and
luminaires for emergency lighting.
Subclause 3.3.4
Replace subclause 3.3.4 by the following:
3.3.4 In case a luminaire is only suitable for direct mounting on non-combustible surfaces
and the relevant symbol (see figure 1) is not applied, a warning notice shall be attached to the
luminaire or given in the manufacturer’s instructions explaining that the luminaire can under
no circumstances be mounted on normally flammable surfaces.

L’interprétation suivante a été acceptée à la réunion du GT SC/CEI 34D LUMEX qui s’est

tenue à Kista en Avril 1998.
Dans le tableau 3.1 du paragraphe 3.2 le marquage du symbole concernant la distance
minimale des objets éclairés (paragraphe 3.2.13) appartient à C: «Marquage qui doit être
observé après l’installation et visible, lorsque le luminaire est assemblé et installé, avec des
lampes en position, comme en usage normal». Cependant, le dernier alinéa du paragraphe
3.2.13 nécessite que le symbole de distance minimale et sa signification soient également
être portés, soit sur le luminaire, soit dans les instructions fournies avec le luminaire.
L’interprétation faite par le groupe de travail est que seul le symbole doit figurer sur le
luminaire. L’explication du symbole doit faire partie des instructions qui accompagnent le
luminaire, si elle ne figure pas sur le luminaire.

INTERPRETATION SHEET
The following interpretation was agreed at the Kista meeting of IEC/SC 34D/WG LUMEX held

in April 1998.
In table 3.1 of subclause 3.2 the marking of the symbol regarding minimum distance from
lighted objects (subclause 3.2.13) belongs to C: ‘Marking to be observed after installation
shall be visible with the luminaire assembled and installed as for normal use and with the
lamp in place’. However, the last paragraph of the subclause 3.2.13 requires that the symbol
for minimum distance and explanation of its meaning shall also be given on the luminaire or in
the instructions with the luminaire.
The interpretation made by the working group is that only the symbol must be provided on the
luminaire. The explanation of the symbol shall be provided in the instructions accompanying
the luminaire, where not already provided on the luminaire.

installation et une utilisation sûre du luminaire ou de l’appareillage d’alimentation indépendant
sans dispositifs de fixation (trous, colliers etc.),(voir paragraphe 3.3), cet appareil peut être
considéré comme satisfaisant aux prescriptions de la norme.

Provided guidance and/or means is given by the manufacturer for the safe installation and
use of a fixed luminaire or independent control gear without fixing devices (holes, brackets,
etc), (see subclause 3.3), this equipment can be regarded as complying with the requirements
of the standard.

L’interprétation suivante a été acceptée lors de la réunion du GT LUMEX SC/CEI 34D qui

s’est tenue à Lyon en Octobre 1998.

Luminaires réalisés en matériaux thermoplastiques.
En application des prescriptions des 4.15 et 12.7, il doit être fait référence aux notes
suivantes:
a) «Points de fixation»(en référence à 12.7) indique à la fois les points de fixation des
composants et les points de fixation d’un luminaire sur la surface de montage.
b) «Parties exposées» (en référence à 12.7) concerne la surface extérieure de l’enveloppe
du luminaire.
c) Selon les prescriptions de 12.7, la mesure des parties exposées est réservée aux parties
constituant les fixations du luminaire/composant ou aux parties constituant une barrière de
protection contre les contacts accidentels avec les parties actives, comme l’indique
l’article 8 de cette norme.
d) La partie la plus chaude de la section de matériau thermoplastique est mesurée. C’est
souvent sur la surface interne de l’enveloppe du luminaire et non la surface externe.
e) Les limites de température du matériau définies dans le paragraphe 12.7 sont, en fonction
du matériau, avec ou sans contrainte mécanique.
f) L’application du paragraphe 12.7 doit être considérée avec les prescriptions du
paragraphe 4.15.

INTERPRETATION SHEET
The following interpretation was agreed at the Lyon meeting of IEC/SC 34D/WG LUMEX held

in October 1998.
Luminaires made with thermoplastic materials.
In applying the requirements of 4.15 and 12.7 the following notes are to be referred to:
a) "Fixing points" (as referred to in suclause 12.7) means both the fixing points of components
and the fixing points of a luminaire to the mounting surface.
b) "Exposed part" (as referred to in subclause 12.7) means the outer surface of the luminaire
enclosure.
c) With respect to subclause 12.7 measurement of exposed parts is restricted to those parts
providing the luminaire/component fixing or parts providing a protective barrier against
accidental contact with live parts, as required by section 8 of this standard.
d) The hottest part of the thermoplastic material section requiring test is measured. This may
often be on the internal surface of a luminaire enclosure not the outer surface.
e) The material temperature limits defined by subclause 12.7 are with respect to materials
under both mechanical load and no mechanical load.
f) The application of subclause 12.7 must be read together with the requirements of subclause
4.15.

requirement of item b) applies.

A non-detachable flexible cable or cord is a normal flexible supply cable which is only
detachable with the use of a tool. A detachable flexible cable or cord can be removed simply
during regular use of a luminaire.
