Overview
The IEC 60598-2-11:2013/AMD1:2022 is the first amendment to the international standard IEC 60598-2-11:2013, titled "Luminaires – Part 2-11: Particular requirements – Aquarium luminaires." Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment addresses specific safety, construction, and performance requirements for aquarium luminaires. As a key part of international electrotechnical standardization, this document ensures that aquarium lighting products meet consistent safety and quality benchmarks globally.
Key Topics
1. Definition and Classification
- Introduction of terms such as non-permanently attached aquarium luminaire and permanently attached aquarium luminaire.
- Classification of aquarium luminaires follows provisions set in IEC 60598-1, establishing a unified framework for luminaire types.
2. Marking and User Instructions
- Requires external, visible marking on luminaires that require opening for maintenance.
- Mandatory instruction: “Disconnect supply before opening the luminaire for maintenance” to ensure user safety.
3. Construction and Ingress Protection (IP) Requirements
- Non-permanently attached luminaires must achieve a minimum ingress protection rating of IPX7, allowing submersion or contact with water under certain voltage conditions (Class III luminaires operating below 12 V RMS or 30 V DC ripple free).
- Permanently attached luminaires have nuanced IP requirements ensuring safety both during operation and in overfilling scenarios. Parts at least 15 mm above maximum water level require at least IPX4 protection, while others may have IPX2 depending on their positioning and use.
- Mechanisms are included to prevent detachment or displacement, tested through specific force application on the fixing mechanism.
4. Wiring and Electrical Safety
- Luminaire cables must be fixed, flexible, and at least 1.5 meters in length for ease of installation and maintenance.
- The plug's degree of protection may differ from the luminaire’s IP rating but must maintain electrical safety.
- Applicable cable materials and conductor cross-sections are specified to ensure durability and compliance with SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) requirements.
5. Endurance and Thermal Testing
- Defines test procedures incorporating endurance and thermal tests aligned with IEC 60598-1 standards to verify long-term operational safety.
- Simulation of operating conditions includes mounting luminaires on matt black painted wooden boards replicating maximum water levels to assess heat dissipation and water resistance.
6. Resistance to Dust and Moisture
- Specifies IPX2 and IPX4 tests conducted in realistic luminaire positions (closed or operating states) to validate protection against dust, splashes, and moisture ingress.
Applications
This amendment is critical for manufacturers, designers, and testing laboratories focused on aquarium lighting products. By adhering to these updated requirements, stakeholders can:
- Guarantee product safety in wet and submerged environments typical of aquariums.
- Assure compliance with international safety standards for electrical products used in aquatic installations.
- Enhance product reliability, reducing risks such as electrical shock, luminaire detachment, or water ingress failures.
- Support market access and acceptance in regions demanding IEC compliance evidence.
Aquarium luminaires complying with IEC 60598-2-11:2013/AMD1:2022 help aquarium hobbyists, public aquariums, and commercial aquatic installations maintain safe, durable, and efficient lighting conditions conducive to aquatic life health and visually pleasing environments.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

"luminaire" as follows:
11.4.2
non-permanently attached aquarium luminaire
11.4.3
permanently attached aquarium luminaire
11.5 Classification of luminaires
Replace the existing sentence with the following new text:
Aquarium luminaires shall be classified in accordance with the provisions of Section 2 of
IEC 60598-1.
Aquarium luminaires are referred to as luminaires in this document.

11.7 Construction
Replace the existing Subclauses 11.7.1, 11.7.2 and 11.7.4 with the following new Subclauses
11.7.1, 11.7.2 and 11.7.4:
11.7.1 Non-permanently attached luminaires shall have protection against ingress of moisture
of at least IPX7. Only class III luminaires where the working voltage does not exceed 12 V RMS
or 30 V ripple free DC can be positioned in contact with or submersed in water.
11.7.2 Permanently attached luminaires shall have protection against ingress of moisture of
at least IPX7 with the following exception.
If a permanently attached luminaire is used in an aquarium provided with suitable drainage
apertures or a cut off mechanism, all surfaces which are located at least 15 mm above the
maximum water level reached in case of overfilling shall be at least IPX4.
For the other surfaces of permanently attached luminaires, the protection against ingress of
moisture can be reduced to at least IPX2, if the following situations apply. During refilling, any
contact between water splashes and hazardous part of the luminaire shall be prevented by the
position of the luminaire.
11.7.4 Provision shall be made to prevent a permanently attached luminaire (see 11.4.3 –
Note 1 to entry) becoming unfixed.
Compliance shall be checked by the following test.
For a permanently attached luminaire which is intended for direct mounting on the wall of the
tank, a force is applied to the fixing mechanism for 1 min in the most onerous direction. During
the test, the fixing mechanism is mounted on test aquarium "walls" made of ordinary window
glass, with the minimum and maximum thickness as specified by the manufacturer. The fixing
mechanism shall not start moving on the glass at a pull of 20 N.
11.11 External and internal wiring
Replace the existing Subclauses 11.11.1, 11.11.2 and 11.11.3 with the following new
