Overview
IEC 63241-3-1:2025 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the dust measurement procedure for transportable table saws. This part 3-1 standard sets out particular requirements that apply specifically to transportable table saws designed to cut wood or wood-based materials. It supplements and modifies the general provisions presented in IEC 63241-1:2023, which covers electric motor-operated tools' dust measurement procedures in general.
Designed for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and safety regulators, IEC 63241-3-1 focuses on ensuring consistent, reliable dust emission measurements during the operation of transportable table saws. Dust control is critical in woodworking environments to protect operators from respiratory hazards and to improve workplace safety and compliance with health regulations.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
Applies exclusively to transportable table saws used for cutting wood and wood-based materials, including particleboard. This part should be used in conjunction with IEC 63241-1:2023 to cover all general and specific aspects.Definitions
Defines "table saw" as a tool featuring a rotating toothed saw blade projecting through a slot in a support table, with the motor and drive assembly mounted below the table.Test Procedure and Operating Conditions
The standard specifies how to conduct dust emission tests under load conditions using particleboard workpieces. Key parameters include:- Particleboard specifications such as density (~610 kg/m³), bending strength, elasticity, and internal bond strength.
- Cutting approximately 10 mm wide strips over an 800 mm length using a rip fence.
- Using a new saw blade for each test tailored for the particleboard material.
- Setting a cutting depth of 22 mm ± 1 mm.
- Applying sufficient feed force for stable operation without excessive force or speed.
- Performing 20 to 30 cuts depending on saw power rating within a specified test duration extended if necessary.
Instrumentation and Reporting
Testing instruments must meet requirements defined in IEC 63241-1. Reports must include details of the operating conditions, saw setup, test cycles, and any extension of test duration beyond 10 minutes to achieve the number of required cuts.
Applications
Manufacturers of Transportable Table Saws
Use IEC 63241-3-1 to design and evaluate table saws for dust emission, ensuring compliance with dust control measures critical for occupational safety and regulatory standards.Testing and Certification Bodies
Deploy standardized dust measurement protocols as per IEC 63241-3-1 to objectively assess dust emissions, enabling reliable certification and quality assurance.Workplace Safety and Health Management
Enable companies to select table saw equipment with verified dust emission performance to reduce workers' exposure to harmful wood dust particles.Regulatory Compliance
Align with international safety recommendations for dust generation and control in woodworking tool operation, facilitating global market access.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
