Overview

IEC 60335-2-107:2017/AMD2:2021 is an important international amendment issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on the safety requirements specific to robotic battery powered electrical lawnmowers. This amendment updates Part 2-107 of the IEC 60335 series, which addresses household and similar electrical appliances, emphasizing enhanced safety protocols for advanced autonomous lawn care devices. As robotic lawnmowers become increasingly popular, adhering to global safety standards like this amendment ensures reliable, secure operation with emphasis on user protection and device reliability.

Key Topics

  • Obstruction Sensors: A critical safety feature requiring robotic lawnmowers to be equipped with obstruction sensors that are fully functional in all operating positions and travel directions. These sensors must detect and respond to physical obstacles, ensuring the machine stops or reroutes to prevent injury or damage.

  • Force Limits on Impact: The machine’s force when encountering an obstruction is strictly limited to a maximum of 260 N during the first 0.5 seconds and 130 N thereafter, reducing potential harm or damage.

  • Stop and Restart Protocols: Upon detecting an obstacle, the lawnmower’s traction drive must stop within a calculated stopping time, then restart in a different direction within 3 seconds to move away from the obstacle. Extended sensor activation beyond 3 seconds triggers cutting tool shutdown to ensure safety.

  • Non-contact Sensor Criteria: The amendment allows the use of non-contact sensors under specific, validated conditions with detailed mechanical and environmental specifications to ensure reliable obstacle detection without physical contact.

  • Testing and Compliance: The amendment defines rigorous test procedures utilizing force-measuring instruments and simulated obstacles that robotic lawnmowers must pass to verify compliance with obstruction sensor performance, stopping times, and safety measures.

  • Fault Handling and Software Controls: Electronic and programmable circuits integrated into the lawnmower must be resilient to fault conditions as described in the document, with software controls conforming to IEC requirements for error management.

Applications

This standard applies directly to manufacturers, testing agencies, and certification bodies involved with:

  • Design and Production of robotic battery powered lawnmowers, ensuring devices meet stringent international safety standards before market release.

  • Safety Testing and Certification to evaluate whether lawnmowers comply with obstruction sensor requirements, force limits during collision, and software reliability under fault conditions.

  • Quality Assurance and Risk Management during the development and post-production phases to minimize hazards associated with autonomous operation of lawn care robots.

  • Regulatory Compliance for companies aiming for global markets, facilitating product acceptance by fulfilling IEC’s internationally recognized safety criteria.

Adoption of IEC 60335-2-107:2017/AMD2:2021 helps reduce accidents, liability risks, and enhances consumer trust in robotic lawnmower technology.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60335 Series: Foundation standards related to the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.

  • ISO/TS 15066: Technical specification referenced for guidance on maximum force values in human-robot interactions.

  • IEC 60335-2-107:2017: The base edition for particular requirements of robotic battery powered electrical lawnmowers before Amendment 2 updates.

  • Relevant IEC and ISO Directives: Providing standardized processes for the preparation, development, and maintenance of electrotechnical standards and software fault tolerance (Annex R).

Summary

IEC 60335-2-107:2017/AMD2:2021 amendment sets forth specialized safety requirements for robotic battery powered electrical lawnmowers, focusing on precise obstruction detection, controlled impact forces, reliable stop-and-restart mechanisms, and robust fault handling. This amendment guides manufacturers and testing bodies towards global safety compliance, helping to safeguard users while promoting innovation in autonomous lawn care technology. For anyone involved in design, certification, or regulation of robotic lawnmowers, this IEC amendment is essential for ensuring safe and market-ready products.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.

assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
